but I can't imagine a Battlefield-esque multiplayer shooter in 3rd person- I just don't see it working.
Let's dig a bit deeper. Why wouldn't it work exactly?

Giving the player the option to toggle 1st and 3rd person view on the fly is asking for abuse. The player in 3rd person will have a bigger advantage by being able to peek above and around corners without exposing him or herself to danger while the player in 1st person is stuck with a huge disadvantage. 3rd person would be the only viable option in that scenario. Game balance and all of that. It would probably be okay for a "core" gametype and have it disabled for a "hardcore" mode.

  • That's certainly a problem if you have a first person perspective game in which you allow players to kick the camera out to third person perspective, but not particularly a problem for a game that is designed to be played in the third person perspective :)

Didn't BF2 allow players to toggle perspectives ingame? I haven't played in forever. Anyway, the situation is going to be the same regardless if a game is made for 1st or 3rd person. 3rd person perspective gives players advantages they shouldn't have and playing in 1st person is "competitive" suicide. You couldn't play Ghost Recon (a primarily 3rd person game) or the ARMA series seriously without playing in 3rd person because other players peeking around corners in 3rd person (if the option is enabled). Balance wise 3rd person doesn't make for good gameplay if the game isn't specifically made for it. It has to be either 1st or 3rd. Not both. There's no way to balance that or no one has come up with a solution to balance it yet.

  • Battlefront II allowed players to toggle perspectives, but the default was the third person perspective and subsequently the game was designed for the third person perspective. I understand well that you can't particularly design a game for "both" perspectives, though I think in the scheme of things while offering the first person perspective as a side option to the usual third person perspective is a bit of a trap, it's ultimately harmless with regards to fairness of competition and balance. If players want to handicap themselves by playing from the first person perspective, that's sorta their choice.

  • I went and looked at some footage of BF2 because I haven't played in a long while and it's gameplay and level design favors the 3rd person perspective. I do agree that it could just be an option for the player, but it also could just not be included at all. 1st person perspective in Battlefront is like a vestigial organ that can be removed without causing problems. Choices are great, but when one choice is superior to another then it's not much of a choice is it? Going back to the topic of this sub-thread after refreshing my memory I would say that I agree Battlefront works better as a third person game because it was designed as such, but I still hold my points in the 1st vs 3rd person perspective argument. One or the other. Not both.
