Pope Francis: Who am I to judge gay people?

Linky
Speaking to reporters on a flight back from Brazil, he reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's position that homosexual acts were sinful, but homosexual orientation was not. He was responding to questions about whether there was a "gay lobby" in the Vatican. "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge them?" He also said he wanted a greater role for women in the Church, but insisted they could not be priests. The Pope arrived back in Rome on Monday after a week-long tour of Brazil - his first trip abroad as pontiff - which climaxed with a huge gathering on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach for a world Catholic youth festival. His remarks on gay people are being seen as much less judgemental than his predecessor's position on the issue. Pope Benedict XVI signed a document in 2005 that said men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests. But Pope Francis said gay clergymen should be forgiven and their sins forgotten. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this very well," Pope Francis said in a wide-ranging 80-minute long interview with Vatican journalists. "It says they should not be marginalised because of this but that they must be integrated into society." But he condemned what he described as lobbying by gay people. "The problem is not having this orientation," he said. "We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem." On the role of women in the Church, he said: "We cannot limit the role of women in the Church to altar girls or the president of a charity, there must be more. "But with regards to the ordination of women, the Church has spoken and says no... That door is closed." Answering questions about the troubled Vatican bank, he said the institution must become "honest and transparent" and that he would listen to advice on whether it could be reformed or should be shut down altogether. "I don't know what will become of the bank. Some say it is better that is a bank, others that it should be a charitable fund and others say close it," he said.
I say it doesn't matter what I think it's that other person whom has to live with their choices and depending upon their faith they will face judgement by their Creator . Eh , so whom am I to judge , I just don't agree with them and carry on with life .

In other news, a major thousand year old religion reaffirmed today that they will not be changing their beliefs anytime soon. And in other news, the earth is still not flat.

So...sorta good Pope Franky? I say he's walking a fine line between public opinion and his faith's stance on homosexuality and women. He gets a decent view in the public's eyes (ignoring the associated pedophilia within the Catholic church, etc), and the Catholic Church's still gets their message across that homosexuality is bad and women can't be priests. I can't really tell if he's giving his opinion coupled with the Catholic Church's opinion, or just being two faced, however.

            • He didn't really say anything new. The Roman Catholic Church's position was always the same AFAIK, the media has sort of just been taking Pope Francis' statements out of context and exaggerating him into this progressive guy.

            • Still won't let women become ministers. His message is probably going to be "toned down" by the rest of the Vatican to remain anit-gay.

              • Well, Pope Francis, its not exactly a yes, but its not exactly a no. You muddled the topic some more, but you are taking your Church in a right direction, your'e changing the Church so gradually, it would be a shame if the next Pope reverses all of these world influencing statements.

"We must be brothers. The problem is lobbying by this orientation, or lobbies of greedy people, political lobbies, Masonic lobbies, so many lobbies. This is the worse problem." So being gay isn't bad but lobbying for the legalization of their rights is bad? Moron. Furthermore, I fail to see how any of the empty statements he made nullifies Christian strictures against sexual acts between gay/lesbian people. This child rapist isn't as noble or progressive as everyone is making him out to be.

                  • He said it's fine to be homosexual, but not do anything homosexual, so really it's no improvement. He's still just a man with a silly outfit.

What the Pope considers fairness: Yo gay people, I really don't think I should judge, but I just thought you should know that what you do constitutes a sinful act. Yo women, I know you would like positions in the church, but you're still not good enough to be priests because you are inferior to men in that regard.
