I'd like to share some thoughts on the Crucible and offer my feedback on potential improvements. Particularly Trials of Osiris, has taken a nosedive in terms of enjoyment and engagement.
Trials of Osiris, for one, needs a complete overhaul. Returning to the 3v3 format is non-negotiable. There's an inexplicable thrill and sense of accomplishment that comes with grinding for flawless victories alongside a team. But here's the hypocrisy of it all: I often find myself running solo because 3v3 just isn't worth the trouble. Why would I bother with the coordination and callouts when I can solo queue and face easier opponents? It's a hollow, unsatisfactory experience that's far from exciting.
And let's talk about timing. Why on Earth isn't Trials available during Iron Banner? I mean, seriously, who wants to spend an entire week playing Iron Banner? I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole, let alone a full week. Offering Trials as an alternative during such events would inject some much-needed variety into the game.
Shifting gears from Trials, Competitive is simply dead. I don't have a magic solution to revive it, but I can certainly tell you what I despise about it. The player pool is so pathetically small that I keep getting matched with the same people over and over. But that's just a symptom of a playlist that isn't fun. What's the motivation here? An emblem? Wow, how thrilling... not. Remember when there were exclusive weapons like Luna's Howl to chase after? That's what made Competitive worthwhile.
And don't even get me started on the ranking system. Win a game, and you get a measly +30; lose one, and it's a whopping -200. It's demoralizing and seemingly designed to keep players away from reaching the pinnacle reward, which is currently nothing more than a glorified emblem.
In short, I want Trials to be a weekly event, regardless of what else is happening in the Destiny universe. Make the rewards challenging but fun to grind for with a dedicated team, not as a solo player. As for Competitive, it needs an extreme makeover. The only thing worth salvaging is the matchmaking system, which, to its credit, does a decent job of pairing solos with solos and squads with squads.
Thank you for your commitment to enhancing the Crucible experience, and I look forward to seeing how these suggestions might be considered for future improvements.

Edited by Luther, Grumpy Old Warlock: 9/10/2023 7:59:32 PMSorry, but as a solo player, I think that's a matter of taste and preference. I work full-time at night, with a nighttime schedule, and end up playing during lower population hours without a choice, and its very difficult for me to find teams who are successful at that hour... And even less likely those players are friends I actually care about building memories with. Being forced to risk the toxicity of LFG, or the sheer incompetence of it, just to fill out a 3-stack for the barrier of entry, would slash the Trials population by 2/3rds. You can still play 3v3 at current. Please don't gatekeep further and turn it into a playlist where only the rich get richer.

I completely understand your perspective, and I respect the diversity of player experiences. It's clear that solo players, like yourself, have their own unique challenges and preferences. I agree that playing solo is more accessible and convenient, but what I'm ultimately advocating for is a return to the original 3v3 format for Trials. My hope is to recapture the excitement and competitive spirit that was once synonymous with Trials of Osiris. Trials used to be a thrilling tournament-style event, filled with intense moments of both frustration and jubilation, all in pursuit of that flawless card. It's those memories that I believe many Guardians cherish, and I'd love to see that spirit revitalized. I'm not trying to gatekeep or exclude anyone; rather, I'm hoping for a balance that allows both solo players and teams to enjoy Trials in their own way. It's about preserving the essence of what Trials was while accommodating the diverse player base and their preferences. Ultimately, we all share a love for Destiny and the Crucible, and it's important that the game continues to evolve in a way that respects everyone's playstyle and preferences.

Edited by Luther, Grumpy Old Warlock: 9/10/2023 8:14:23 PMTrials of Osiris is no longer something new and whimsical. It has become part of our weekly rituals. The glory days of feeling a radiant glow in your chest because you finally got your first Adept weapon is a great memory, but has long since passed. You must recognize that there is high-quality, endgame-defining loot on the line, often for both PvP as well as PvE (think Reed's Regret at the time of launch, or the new heavy Grenade Launcher with Bait and Switch.) That means being gatekept by whether or not you have powerful friends is fundamentally anti-competitive and in poor spirit. It would be very upsetting to alot of people for very good reason. With that sort of incentive and loot on the line, it certainly does make for excitement at the prospect of flawing your card, but it doesn't breed positive competitive spirit. It breeds a sense of elitism and gatekeeping where LFGing party leaders will check Trials Reports of anyone who asks and kicks people who they don't think can carry. While I would enjoy a more spirted and sportsmanlike Crucible experience, I don't think gatekeeping Trials freelancers for the sake of projected atmosphere is healthy for the game, full-stop. That energy should instead be put into improving the Competitive Division. The best compromise I would possibly be able to argue with you is a return of the Freelance playlist, so there's 3v3, or Solos Only. This would also placate the people calling for the removal of Duo queue due to its perceived advantages.

I appreciate your perspective, and it's clear that we have different memories and expectations when it comes to Trials of Osiris. For me, Trials holds a special place as a sort of mini-tournament-style game mode, where the thrill was in striving to go flawless and if you couldn't you just went in for pinnacle gear. My fondest memories of Trials are intertwined with D1 where I believe it was at it's peak. I understand your point about the desire for a more spirited and sportsmanlike Crucible experience, and I respect that. It's evident that you value accessibility for all players, regardless of their fireteam situation. That being said, I personally believe that Trials should remain a challenging and rewarding mode, much like the memories I cherish from Destiny 1. While we may not see eye to eye on this matter, I'm grateful for the healthy discussion, and I hope that Destiny continues to evolve in a way that accommodates the diverse preferences of its player base.

Edited by Luther, Grumpy Old Warlock: 9/10/2023 8:33:23 PMYou're very polite and well-spoken, so I like talking to you even if we disagree. :) EDIT: And to be clear, I'm not saying it should be easy or that the loot should be freely accessible. Its still something prestigious. But I don't think eliminating freelance solo players from the experience would improve the game for the majority of players. The 3v3 fans will continue to play that way, but now you're removing the possibility for a skilled, hard-working solo player to even attempt to roll the dice and fight just as hard as you would, if not harder. I hope you are very successful next weekend in Trials! Rumor has it it'll be Igneous Hammer.~
