Former Bungo Employee on state of the game: A great company going through really hard time right now

I think this Glassdoor review tells you all you need to know about the state of the game right now: Pros -Amazing Benefits -Aspirational 10 year plan -Studio President is personable and cares Cons Things have changed quite a bit at Bungie since their split from Activision. I had been with the company since shortly after Halo Reach (almost a decade). While some aspects have improved, such as reduced crunch, the studio seems to have lost a lot of appreciation for veteran talent. Out of necessity, Bungie needs to learn and hire a lot of the publication roles Activision provided, and studio leadership has definitely let the fox guard the hen house in this time because of it. As a result, crunch has become a regular occurrence again, and burnout of the Destiny franchise is real. Many veterans are leaving to other studios formed by Bungie alumni or going elsewhere in the Seattle game dev scene. Those roles are not being backfilled, but rather replaced with a "do more with less" attitude, filling roles instead with contractors rather than full time talent we had been clicking on full cylinders with between the Taken King and Forsaken releases. These factors have led to the poorest morale I've seen at the company, which has been declining since late 2018. Leadership says they understand, and will do better, but still keeps leaning into not backfilling jobs and waiting to align on a direction before it's too late to deliver. This has been most obvious on the Narrative and QA teams. Not seeing any improvement in sight, I sadly left the job I thought I would retire at. Advice to Management Don't lose sight of who built Destiny. You're bringing in a lot of contract narrative, design, and QA folks, and it's making life really rough on your middle-level talent ____________________________________ Edit: If you read the other reviews (link above), you'll see that many employees blamed management for most of the issues within the company. Bad management seems to be at the core of Bungie's decline. Something many of us already suspected.

  • Hard to feel sorry for a multi million pound company, I know they weren't happy with paying publishing cost. But the split from Activision was a business decision, purely to make more money. It wasn't for the better of the community, as they tried to lead us to believe.I believe the real problem is upper management not supporting the game as they should, because of other business ventures outside of destiny. I don't think anyone blame the workers, even though the're put front line to try and deal with the communities back lash. P. S Can't really blame you for leaving bungie, maybe it was a smart decision.

        • Sounds like he (or she) was on the losing side of the house cleaning. That "veteran talent" worked on HALO, and made SHOOTER games. Which is of limited value for a game that is primarily a blend of MMO and Looter-shooter. The fact is that it was obvious even to outsiders (because it kept showing up in the product) that there were irreconcilable differences between key players at Bungie as to what KIND of game that Destiny should be....and you simply cannot have that at a company. Worse still you cant' have it showing up in your product. Its like playing American Football. Once the play has been called in the huddle....YOU RUN THE PLAY. You may not like it. You may not agree with it. But you do everything you can to make that that play WORK. Because a BAD PLAY CALL....VIOLENTLY EXECUTED will usually produce better results than a TIMID or CONFUSED call....that is executed in a similar fashion. Its why well-led companies insist that everyone pull in the same direction.....get behind the current business plan..... ...or go work somewhere else. In the long run that will be better for Bungie and for Destiny than PVE and PVP factions pulling in opposing directions with opposing visions for the game. As for the rest of what I saw, It looked pretty typical for whats been in the wind for years. Under a lot of stress because of a crazy schedule to deliver content, and tools poorly suited to the task. But also struggling with the problems created by explosive growth in size of the company. In small companies a lot of tasks can be done person to person with no formal command or communication structure. Person A just gets up and goes over to talk to Person B. But in large companies, things can get chaotic if you DON"T formalize these workflows, chains of responsibility and lines of communication. Because what used to just involve Person A and Person B....many now involve 30 people working on three different teams in two different locations. ...and if you don't have formal meetings and write things down....keeping track of who said waht who decided what can become impossible.

          • From what I’ve seen, it seems like there is a disconnect between the different teams, especially between the pvp and pve teams

          • Yeah, and sunsetting weapons and armor is really going to drop that playerbase. Bungie should just close its doors. They need to sell Destiny back to Activision.

            • Hard to feel sorry for them when they ask us what we the community want, then they go ahead and do the exact opposite.

                  • I don’t think that it’s just Bungie management, ask most workers and they’ll tell you problems in their management teams, regardless the work. I think there is a division between management and workers wherever you go. Managers should realise that it is the workers that know the job better than most, and should be respected, valued and have input for any company to flourish.

LOL had to chime in on this. Bungo really did rely on Activisions GOOD Studios to carry the weight. Now that they don't have Activision to Backpack them to good releases you can see how bad it has gotten. Everything is -blam!-ING LAME now. If the workplace morale is bad this will directly translate to the game experience. There is NO WAY can they hold up their promises on making this game better when they have no idea what the -blam!- they are doing.... oh well. Lost cause at this point. Bungo is Bunghole... And the Bunghole Fanboys on this Post..... CRICKETS....

How come none of you guys stand up for the players and tell Luke smith his ideas suck? I’m sure the Chinese investors have watered down the budget but geez, why did you guys take an investment from them if they weren’t interested in putting the money into Destiny? You guys are wasting money on mobile games?

                      • No response from the Bungie shills or the BDF? Why is that I wonder? Maybe this is because this evidence is the likely explanation for the appalling state the game has been in since the split from Activision? Now I dislike Activision as much as EA, or as much as the next gamer. However the studios they brought with them (VV and HMS) arguably created the best content within the entire lifecycle of D2. Without Activision, Bungie have fallen back on the lamest of content and turned the franchise into a mobile game. If this fall DLC is not the very best content that matches or exceeds the previously and commonly agreed high points of the franchise (Forsaken and TTK), then this is going to be the end of Destiny as a franchise. Will Destiny die? No, I really don’t think that is possible. There are plenty of casuals and fanboys that will continue to buy content and play. However the lower numbers will certainly impact many aspects of the game, especially matchmaking. Lower numbers will also mean less revenue and a continual slide away from anything resembling quality content.

                        • Sounds like Bungie leadership is stressed to the max: "Poor treatment of contractors." Former Contractor - Video Editor in Bellevue, WA Doesn't Recommend I worked at Bungie for less than a year Pros As a contractor you're not expected to be there 24/7. They will pay whatever you ask if they're in a deep enough bind. Cons You get treated like a second class citizen. If you stand up for yourself they tell you you'll never be able to work for them again. They're incredibly into themselves, thinking you'd want to ever work for them again after how they treat you. People I dealt with were also yellers.

                          • The 10 year plan was dumb from the very beginning and now everyone, even Bungie, realizes this. If you were to take all the content from D1 and D2 you generally have a solid online game with enough content to last your average gamer 1 year. Lol

                            • Their game looks exactly like the product of what he's describing, and I've seen no bright areas lately. It all looks downhill from here. I also believe this is why they are sunsetting gear, it takes less people to recycle than it does to create new stuff. In the end it turns out Bungie management wins out for who killed Destiny.
