Sounds like a bit to much story for bungie.
But I'm sure the only way we could possible save them would be to kill Taken on Io with sidearms, visit Saint-14. Complete 5 lost sectors while wearing Gambit armour, visit the Drifter. Complete 3 public events with 4 different subclasses, visit Ikora and charge up some stupid relic thing.

You missed the bit where youve gotta wait for 3-6 weeks for the relic thing to charge and give us access to the next part of the "story.
