Destiny 2:
- Crisper, more polished graphics (although D1 had better contrast - light / shadow).
- Ledge grabbing so jumping/platforming is a bit easier.
- More varied public events in patrol zones.
- 6 man match-made activities like Menagerie / Sundial. A welcome addition.
- Solo players have more of a chance of getting gear and exotics (that is indeed a good thing - 90% of the time I'm a solo player). However there were activities in D1 that were manageable solo such as nightfalls, PoE etc. Solo players entering D2 raids via LFG seem to have a tougher time than D1 LFG mainly due to increased mechanics.
- You don't have to go to orbit to pick a new location on the map.
- You have multiple landing zones on some of the planets for easier navigation
Destiny 1:
- Actual DLC's with story content instead of seasonal passes with 'checklist' quests (the content between expansions not the expansions themselves).
- We as guardians felt powerful
- Skill trees for subclasses so you could have the build you wanted.
- Less time-gated "FOMO" content. You could play the content more at your own pace.
- Better looking armor
- Raids, particularly the early raids were accessible for newer players (and no revive tokens).
- Raid exclusive gear having perks which are relevant to that specific raid.
- Factions, with rankups and cool weapons
- You could play any game mode you wanted and still rank up / get good gear.
- You could reach max power (apart from 'Forever 29' early on) without need of relying on special engrams dropping a couple of times a week.
- Normal strikes were actually worth playing
- Less Eververse
- Armsday
- PvP maps on the whole were more suited to 6v6.
- You could play any story mission any time you wanted.
- More mystery / a sense of awe and wonder that D2 just doesn't capture.
- You don't spend hours loading into the tower.
- better soundtrack
*with thanks to @crazycazza95 for a few more additions to the list.
So yeah on balance, D1 for me was better. If they could combine the good parts of D2 with D1 the game would be much improved.

I respect the list but you’re high if you think d1 didn’t have checklist quests
-
Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 have had the same amount of DLC
-
Did you forget that you needed to level up the weapon to unlock the perks in D1? That was always a huge hassle to me. Before taken king I believe you needed raid materials to fully upgrade exotics (ascendant energy)

Edited by Galactic Zones: 2/21/2020 7:22:20 PMGood point 👍 Edit: I forgot about motes of light

Nice try at making a based statement by saying a system used to suck until the TTK. D1 Infusion system rn > D2 infusion system rn.

Both games have their own problems. If you prefer D1 more power to you but I tried it recently and just felt kinda clunky. I don’t like where the current Destiny is heading with the way seasons are being handled.

Do you think D2 looks crisper? I always thought it was the other way around, when I questioned it another guardian said it's because a grain of some kind is in D2 that isn't in D1. I'm not technical so don't know how accurate that is.
-
Wait. Was forsaken, shadowkeep not actual stories? What about coo and warmind? You point out the seasonal stuff but ignore the dlcs.....
-
Edited by Galactic Zones: 2/21/2020 4:05:31 PMYeah I was referring to the content between annual expansions, rather than the expansions themselves. Sorry I should've been clearer.
-
Not the best comparison as d1 really didnt have content in between expansions if i recall. Best way would be drought or seasonal drops between expansions.
-
I hope you're kidding about solo play in D2 being better? Crota, PoE, Nightfalls, boss stages in most raids were all manageable solo. If anything I think D2 is worse as a solo player. D2 has very little positives compared to D1, yes the updated graphics, movement ability to go from one zone to another without having to go to orbit is better, but asides from that, its lacking depth and that ability to draw players in and want to do activities.
-
You're right - a lot of the content in D1 was manageable solo. I was talking about general day to day play and ranking/powering up - that sort of thing.
-
Even as a solo player, lfgs were more lenient and forgiving in raids, folk were willing to spend time teaching, take the wipes so folk knew their roles, which most got quickly enough, could you imagine trying to do an lfg for Kings Fall now?
-
You’re absolutely right 👍
-
- More mystery / a sense of awe and wonder that D2 just doesn't capture. Nice to see this community giving very specific, meaningful feedback as always
-
I agree with this on everything except the dreaming city and it’s content. This gave me a lot of mystery and a sense of wonder and aw
-
Lost me on solo play
-
The solo play thing I think is a worse in D2, D1 you could solo Crota, Boss stage in Kings Fall, Night falls easily, PoE and probably more that I'm forgetting.
-
Thats not the fun solo stuff he means, he means content that can be done by solo players (players who refuse to play with others) and it can be done repeatedly and easily. Thats were he lost me.
-
I don't agree with your subjective ones, but otherwise this is a great analysis. I don't care what Armor looks like, soundtrack is almost as good to me, Story telling is lighter, but less stupid imo (we just jump from hive to vex?) (We killed oryx already in that mission, etc), mystery is as good as can be expected. Unless we travel to a new galaxy with all new races of enemies that won't change. We'll still be shooting who we have for 5+ years.

We will all remember d1 and d2 differently than others, some will like d1 more than d2, others will like d2 better but, for those who liked d1 better, alot of it is those little things that are hard to pinpoint, the intangibles, things we forget and we don't forget how crappy some things were. forever 29 sucked but, at the same time.. you had to be there for it.. the struggle was real but, is was also mystifying, it was full of wonder and excitement. Look at the videos of those getting Ghorn for the first time.. how me a video of anyone in d2 with this level of thrill. The raids.. same thing, hard or normal, they presented great graphics, fit the narrative and provided challenges that weren't just mechanical convoluted strings of tasks to get to a damage phase and then repeate it perfectly over and over, yes, you had mechanics and you had to be on point but, those hero moments, the one phase kills, the power we all felt as characters were unsuprpassed. I do still play d2, the gun play is unmatched but, everything else.. I think of Destiny 1 as the coca cola syrup.. while d2 is the shipped syrup, at some shitty corner store that is watered down significantly.. sure.. it tastes close.. leaves you wanting more but, more of what you can't get at that store..

This is what I was looking for thank you so much. You just filled the hole in my gaming existence. Amen my brotha
-
Absolutely agree with this. Amazingly accurate comment.

What story was in d1 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think people forgot how the vanilla d1 worked when you had too upgrade weapon perks with raid resources so be lucky we don't have to do that here
