I feel too restricted at home.

This will probably sound stupid to most of you, but it’s really been irritating me. My parents are really restrictive. I basically have the same privileges as my younger siblings. I don’t get to decide how long I stay up at night, or even when I get to. Some nights I’m just forced to go to bed at 8:00. I don’t get to decide when I play video games, or for how long. All the books that are my age my mom has to read first, and she never reads so most of the time I sit around bored, which is partly the reason I’m on Offtopic so much. My closest sibling is three years younger than me, so I’m kinda alone. Like today, I did yard work in the morning and then laundry all afternoon, then my mom tells us we can’t do video games. So I’m sitting here waiting for the dryer to finish with literally nothing to do. I don’t even get to choose how I spend my money. I want to buy Spider-Man, but my mom won’t let me. The last time I wanted to buy something it took literally two months of begging before I could get it... with my Amazon gift card. I’m just getting frustrated and tired of this.
Sorry for the no paragraphs rant, I need to get this out of my system.
Look on the bright side. At least they’re not entitled. I’ve heard nasty things about entitled parents. Good thing I’ve never met one, ay?

  • I feel for you. While I admit, most of the restrictions on my end have been for my own good (since I tend to stay on here for too long), I don't however understand when parents like this are so restrictive of activities. Sometimes a little freedom helps people make mistakes, which helps them learn from them and grow as people.

  • I feel you; my family can be a little like that sometimes. But it’s important to realize that what they’re doing is what they think is best for you, even if you don’t feel the same way.
bump for sympathy

baited
• I understand where you’re coming from, your situation was mine a few years back. All I can really say is every parent is different, and what works for one person’s parents may not work for another’s. Your parents are parenting the best way they know how, but yes, that can sometimes be annoying or restrictive at times. If you want to know how I got out of that situation, it involved huge research papers, scientific, mathematical, and logical proofs, and a LOT of hours of debate and discussion.

It could be that they're really overprotective of you and don't want to see their son grow up to be a failure. (Getting in the wrong crowds, etc.)

You may not believe this, but they are doing the best they know how. Some of what they teach you, you will be grateful for. Some of it, you will never understand what they were thinking. Once you get out and into college, you will experience almost complete freedom and all I can say is to not let it corrupt you and change you. You will have a lot of things at your finger tips to try that can have serious repercussions for you, so try to be smart and safe. Then once you are out on your own and living your life, you will slowly see what was good and what was bad or worthless. Just remember to thank them for the good and let the worthless go. Finally, don't feel bad you needed to blow off the steam. You have to or you will explode. Do what you need to prevent that.

Makes me feel lucky. My parents are some of the chillest people ever.
Honestly though, about your problem, try to talk with them one on one for a bit. Try to present this argument to them, and see if they can see it from your perspective. If their kind of parents that don't listen to reason and just go "You're ungrateful." then your -blam!-ed outta luck.
• Overly restrictive parenting can honestly be just as bad for a kid as overly lax parenting. If it was me, I'd look for a job as soon as I was able and start becoming as independent as I could.

          • I know this will show my age but have you ever considered pursuing a job? It'll get you out of the house and pitching the idea to your parents might get them to ease up.

                • That's unfortunate that they seem to be that restrictive. All too often that manner of heavy handedness tends to have kids become more rebellious when they come of age that they start to have more freedoms. (Not saying you will do that). All I can say is that maybe find some things you can do outside. Occupy yourself in your ability to do things when you aren't allowed to do the inside things you want to do.
