I would rather be able to masterwork weapons and armor through use, if I wanted. I continue to hover around the same core amount even though I play the game "how I want to."

You get 21 free cores a week just for being in a clan and finishing Hawthorne's shit. Not to mention the game hands them out left right and center. Anybody who still has problems with cores at this point is absolutely mental and could stand to learn to manage their choices better. I think we'd all be 100% alright if they did just remove the cost - but at this point it's becoming borderline -blam!- how much people complain about it when it's become easier and easier to manage. If they spent nearly as much time playing the game, as they did moaning on the forums, it probably wouldn't be an issue. I play less than 6 hours a week in most cases, so I sure as hell don't qualify for hardcore or verteran or elitist status - yet I never need to explicitly farm cores because there's just so many ways to get them. These people crying either play 1 hour a week, or they infuse every single thing that is 1 point better.
