I agree wholeheartedly with this, they need to pivot the game away from being centered around the eververse, currently everything seems to be designed around getting your next bright engram, make the player interact with the storefront try and tempt them to spend some money and the enjoyment of the game has suffered as a result.
The lack of depth in destiny 2 when destiny 1 wasn't a deep game to begin with has hurt the game as well. At this point a pivot towards a more D1 player customization system would be desirable, I'd even go so far as to say the re-introduction of the D1 content as a free DLC to D2 would help, I.E the game needs to pivot to the more usual mmo model of expanding the base game rather than releasing a named sequel and treating them as separate entities, yes it would need a massive balance pass, yes we are talking about a serious amount of work, but at this stage Destiny as a franchise has gone from being perceived as a core gaming title to more of a clash of clans/candy crush style money extractor.

Like i use to say Destiny 2 has no story at all, it´s more like: we were attacked and we just defeated them. Destiny 1 had mistery, sure that the story was disconected between fallen , hive and cabal, but we had the Grimoire to explain things missing between. The lore contained on the grimoire that we picked from dead ghosts and calcified fragments gave us all the depth that we needed to understand Destiny´s universe. Grimoire filled all the holes, well not all but most of it and at the same time kept that sense of mistery. Book of Sorrows is a master piece lore wise. I loved the chase for those pieces of grimoire, calcifieds and sivas, fragments of lore that made some of us create fantasies about Destiny universe, just look at the number of possible explanations about those pieces of lore, made by the so called lore masters. They striped Destiny 2 of all that, it´s hollow, it´s another generic shooter at the momment, nothing else. Sorry if i´m offtopic but i always get a little upset when people says that Destiny 1 has no depth or story.

When I was talking depth I was really referring to the fact that D1 was not an overly complicated game in terms of customization mechanics, min maxing was reasonably simple but there were just enough options to feel like your build was tailored to your own preference. D2 obviously is simple to the point of crudity, where sure your appearance might be custom but your build was very much designed by someone else. As to the story point yep D2 delivers a coherent and clearly delivered story for the 8 or so hours it lasts, as you say beyond that nothing, whereas D1 for all its clunkiness did possess that sense of mystery in its' lore something I think most of us probably under appreciated, although a grimoire accessible in game would be nice.

Yep, we wanted grimoire accessible ingame like other games already do in the form of a codex. Now we have collectibles that we can´t collect...how dumb is that!? Sorry for the other part, didn´t realise that you were talking about the mechanics of the game.
