I remember reading that Mars was going to be in Destiny 2 and High Moon Studios was working on it. I guess that got canned when they rebooted. I guess we'll see it in DLC.

Mars is supposed to be in the next expansion. The polar caps on the planet. Everything datamined from the PC version is pretty much leading to that and Ana Bray.
