Enjoying the December Update may mean you need to buy the DLC

I just realized this: if what Bungie has done in the past with DLC content prevails, vanilla players will not have access to heroic strikes, Nightfalls, Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris or Raid Lairs. All pieces of content that will see major improvements with the December Update. This includes quality of life updates, like how we are rewarded and the quality of rewards we receive. In other words: yeah, we’re fixing a bunch of issues with the update, but you’ll only see the benefits if you own Curse of Osiris. This creates a pay wall, in short. This follows on the heels of the XP fiasco, irritation with duplicate rewards, limited ways to get rewards (Iron Banner exemplified this), reward caps (faction rally), lack of end game and zero incentive to play the end game. These issues plague vanilla and are a major source of player frustration and are set to be addressed with the December Update. However, it may not matter to vanilla players as those pieces of content could be locked behind DLC. And just like the XP dampening factors felt like a cash grab for bright engrams, this DLC feels like a cash grab for players to be rewarded in a correct manner, not a DLC. Bungie had the benefit of Destiny 1, where they accumulated three years of data to see what players liked; to see what worked. It feels like they purposely withheld the good, time stamped it for a DLC update and are trying to get away with selling it back to us. This is not praise worthy. This feels criminal. Bungie needs to address what happens to non-DLC holding customers and how they’re going to be able to take advantage of what they, in my opinion, may be cheated out of - the changes in the December update.

  • Yeah this is a very real issue. Frankly how they did it in d1 was wrong and if they do that again .. sigh .

  • I made a post asking if these updates were tied to the DLC, and of course the fanboys told me I was foolish to think that Bungie would do such a thing, and that everyone would get these updates. However, I remember people not having access to Trials in D1 Y1 unless they bought the House of Wolves DLC...I would not be surprised if activities like Heroic Strikes and Nightfalls were moved behind a paywall because they incorporated the new strikes in them...

I don't actually feel bad in the least for people who didn't see this coming. I get it, yadda yadda "they ought not to drop support for the base game just because people didn't purchase" ... whatever. Y'all knew it was going to happen, or else were willfully ignorant. Either peeps paid $90 3+ months ago and are good until next summer, or they're about to get hosed, or they can move on to another game, or they can wait for the complete collection to go on sale in 2020. By now you know what the game is. If you like it, buy the season pass. If not, you're going to be slowly edged out into obscurity and eventual nonfunctionality. Bring your Sound and Fury to the forum all you want, you're not going to upend the business model with your forum posts. Vote with your dollars if you want. Write a letter to your congressman.

      • Not true. There are plenty of changes that don't require DLC. All of the vendor changes, all of the material/token changes. I don't think it classifies as criminal either. Maybe sketchy or immoral. I already bought all the DLC, and would get it anyway, as it looks decent. I think payed DLC is general sucks though. But even if they didn't charge for the DLC, there's no way to be sure it wasn't cut content or something like that all the same. End the end, its a game, and it shouldn't be a huge issue. There are instances where people should explain messed up situations, like Battlefront, so that people know what they are getting into, but this game isn't anything to get bent out of shape over. There are plenty of things more worth getting angry about, beside some game.

        • If you didn't buy the DLC then you aren't being cheated out of anything. Why should you get all the new stuff if you didn't pay for it? Makes no sense at all. Of course you'll be locked out of the new content as you should be......until you buy the DLC. This is not hard to understand LOL...
