I would say the addition of Etheric Light made it better as it let all our gear progress while still giving us the freedom to pick which our combinations. I do believe they should have removed shards and energies long before year two. PoE was a bad way to close out Year 1, they should have just opened the portal area of VoG with a stronger version of Atheon to give a farewell to vanilla Destiny.
