The newness and freshness of the material certainly made it special in those early times. Though I think I enjoyed HoW and the prowling wolves as much as anything in Destiny. The current game has corrected a lot of the weaknesses of the previous versions. I still shudder at the thought of legendary engrams (which at one time were much harder to come by) decrypting into materials in those early stages of the game). Unfortunately, things we originally liked about the game we initially purchased have also been lost with each update or refresh. In with the new and out with the old can be a double edged sword.
