I liked year 1, but that was way too broken for me to say it was better than now. The reason I think everyone loves year 1 was because it was their first experience. Their first time fighting the fallen, their first raid, and things like that. It was a early time where everything felt new and fresh with weapons they wouldn't recognize and abilities they loved to show off. Even if we had year 1's system now, you'd still be in discomfort, because everyone jumped to finding out all the exotics and how to get them, and just about everything was found and spoiled. Either way you'd still be here.
Here's the flaws with year 1 though:
• Planetary material farming was horrendous, and it'd take hours just to upgrade one legendary that you probably wouldn't use.
•There was a lack of diverse armor sets until HoW.
You were forced to use the exact same armor as everyone else to be max level, and that wasn't ideal.
•HoW slaughtered weapon diversity. With rerolling everyone had the same perks on the same weapons. Any excitement for a legendary drop was killed. It wasn't even worth checking the perks, because you knew yours was better in every way. Not even accounting for the lack of balance.
In short, bungie listening to the community in HoW birthed a community of everyone thinking the game revolved around them. People wanted everything nerf'd from that point on, because they knew bungie listened to them. It's what started all the complaining that got sniper rifles and legendary hand cannons nerf'd.
