Everyone seems to have forgotten all the flaws about year one and only think about the good ol' days.
- Super limited vault space.
- Gally was the one and only viable PvE heavy.
- If you wanted to move an item to another character you had to deposit and withdraw from the tower (a Gally per character 'member?).
- Farming for materials.
- Reaching max level (light was very different back then) was super hard and totally luck based. Reaching 30 was stupidly hard.
- Couldn't buy armor or weapon parts.
- Very few bounty slots.
- Some bounties were almost impossible to complete.
- Worst crucible balance ever. Suros here suros there, at least we now have archetype based meta back then the meta was 1 weapon.
- Terrible quests and storytelling.
- If you didn't have a lot of friends in the game doing raids or even the NF was near impossible.
And could go on and on. Year 3 has been the best for almost every aspect of Destiny, sure it still has its flaws but there's been a noticable improvement in the quality of life and the state of the game.

Game felt rewarding, I don't feel anything now when I play.
-
That is because it is 2 years old and u have everything u would want
-
Even the new stuff? I barely spent a day playing the Dawning update, in fact I enjoy Private Matches the most. I haven't gotten Ice Breaker back or the Solarlord, I just don't feel the urge to get them anymore.

Year 1 had a lot of problems which you summed up pretty nicely. However, Destiny has never fully recaptured the feeling of mystery you got when entering the Vault of Glass for the first time, or the shock of hearing the Exotic noise and looking at the corner of the screen to see what it was. Or the difficulty level of attempting a raid where nobody in your fireteam is the recommended level. Overall, I still think Destiny is a great game and has improved significantly since it first released. However, Bungie has progressively catered their game to the more casual crowd with every update. I don't blame them, since that's the best way to expand your total play base and make the most money, but they've made the overall difficulty of the game significantly easier and made it extremely easy to max out your level and obtain exotics. I'm probably in the minority, but I legitimately enjoyed the grind to max level and the grind for exotics. And as frustrating as it was spending dozens of hours over several days to beat Vault of Glass, the feeling of accomplishment when you were finally done is still unparalleled by anything I've seen in Destiny since then.

I'm Starting to think that's just because it was new,and so were we.although, still, the pinnacle of pve is defending conflicts. Goblins, hobgoblins, Minotaur's, gatekeeper, green goblins (lol forgot their names) all of it added up to non stop balls to the wall madness... Skolas is a distant second.
-
Yeah I definitely think it being new and me being new to the game definitely played a role in that. But to your point Skolas was also soooo difficult when he came out and I had such a feeling of accomplishment when I finally beat him. And that wasn't too close to the beginning of the game. I thought that fight alone was better than the entirety of the Crota raid (going by difficulty anyway).

HoW era was the best.

I feel like taken king was the best thing since year 1 destiny I do remember the bad things about it then as well the good I was a beta player, rise of iron felt to much of a grind the raid was fine but the overall DLC or expansion what ever you want to call it was disappointing I can only hope that destiny 2 will be something positive
-
I agree with you. People just think about the good things and not the bad and it's mostly nostalgia. Destiny is definitely better now than it was before TTK. Sure, it still has many flaws, but it is still better.

I'm one with the force and the force is with me ..... ❤vanilla

I think this is unfair, first, y1 had many flaws, I agree, some of them you well pointed them out. However, what I think the OP is referring to is mostly how destiny use to make you feel, rewards, challenge wise etc. For instance, I still remember the first time fatebringer dropped for me, ghorn, black hammer, vision, atheon's epilogue, ice breaker, suros, the vex, etc etc. Now rewards dont feel the same, the game doesnt feel the same, it is too repetitive, I dont think it is because y1 was better, it is because although some of the issues in y1 were correctly addressed IMO (such as vault space, material farming, etc), there were other things that should have not changed and did. Crucible is not as fun (although more "Balanced"), strikes feel repetitive (despite having many more to choose from), same as NF (beside feeling like I am always doing the same 4 it is easier now and rewards as bad in general). Same as Raids, I remember running VoG and only getting shards, but then one day I would run it and the vex would drop! that feeling is no gone IMO. This is what I am missing, probably I am just too use to destiny and it doesnt feel special anymore. I am really looking forward to Destiny 2 and starting all over again and hopefully get that lost feeling of exciting

used to do as many activeties each week to try to get exotics you didn't have or weapons from raid. loved how you had to put time in to things.

The ONLY things Year 1 had: The game was new so people weren't bored 2 dlcs to keep content coming It was harder to level up so the game lasted longer. Unfortunately, there were limited ways to level up so you were screwed In most other ways it was still a beta The game improved in Year 2 and 3 but the content wasn't there
-
Year 3 is probably my least favorite so far.
-
I don't play much but that's lack of content. Year 1 had more content but the game itself had problems The problem with content now is because if development screw ups before the game was released. They would happen regardless of how the rest of the game changed
-
That and I hate how simple and easy it is to reach that end game level.
-
That's killing the game as well Everyone flies through the content then quits. If you're not on the leading edge to do the raids you get left behind
-
I actually took my time and I didn't reach 400 for a while. It was just way to easy though.
-
It didn't take a great deal Bungie went did it get get a lot of players back for a short time instead of going for the long term. They made it too easy to get the light and released the raids too early I still don't think that Year 1 was better. There was more content but there was a lot wrong with the system. Now the system is better, but there's no content so Bungie is doing cheap tricks to get short boosts of players
-
Year 3 had more quality of the life updates while Year 1 was more rewarding, fun, and challenging for me. Year 3 was a cakewalk and I hate it. Also, it's basically just all reskinned content besides the Raid.
-
It was a new game and had dlcs. That was the only thing that was ok. The game itself needed fixing; not just the bugs but light system and how the whole materials, etc worked. Levelling took a while (ok that's another good thing) but I don't like the idea of armour only increasing level and then being limited to wearing that gear I think the infusion system is better but still not right. After all, it's meant to be the guardian who is blessed by the light not the gear he is wearing The start of year 2 was a lot better than Year 1. We had a better system than Year 1 and there was plenty of content. Just not enough content for a whole year (though it did take me almost the entire year to get through it). If they had brought forward the year 1 raids or released more content no one would look back and say Year 1 was better Some of the stuff has gone too far now. It is too easy to level up and get materials, but there should be a good spot between the current state and Year 1. It was better in year 2 than Year 1 or now You have to look at the entire game to see what is better, not just the amount of content
-
I'm not looking at Year 1 for content, I actually thought it had less than all. Rise of Iron had little, and gave little incentive to play anything TTK offered. Overall, I'd say... Year 1: 7/10 (Fun factor) Year 2: 8/10 (Good story (only one) not enough content for a full year) Year 3: 2/10 (awful excuse for a story, bad strike, only good strikes were reskinned, Supremacy is trash, and the raid was the only thing worth it)
-
Pretty much agree
