How I dealt with inactive/unhelpful players

So people have been posting recently about inactive players in strikes just sitting back, doing no work, and trying to reap free rewards. They'll occasionally move to avoid idle detection. These people are very annoying. I encountered a duo of inactive players just tonight, ~11pm on 11/2/16. I joined Sepiks Perfected at the Walker fight just before Sepiks. I guess I replaced someone who got tired of them and left; they were in a fireteam and sitting way back in a corner. They sent me messages saying they weren't gonna play and that I would have to solo. So what did I do? Well, they either wanted me to finish the strike for them or wanted me to leave so they could invite someone else close to the finish. Either way, I wasn't going to let them have either scenario; at least not easily. So I drew out the encounter as long as possible. I popped some ether seeds and cleared out ads, died, rinsed and repeated for several iterations. Eventually I moved past the Walker and onto Sepiks; the game dragged the other two along but again they sat back doing nothing. So again I popped ether seeds and played around, bs-ing with Sepiks and ads. (Did you know that you can lock Sepiks into not dealing damage by jumping straight into his eye? His melee attack doesn't hit you at point blank range; instead he harmlessly bounces you back outside of his melee range and then resets himself into fire mode, but by that time you can just jump back into his eye.) Anyways, I played around like this for about an hour, all the while getting messages from the other guys like "you having fun yet" and "we've got all night" and "you have no friends"; you know the spiel. Well, apparently they didn't have all night, because after the hour passed they started to participate again. And I pretty much just let them kill Sepiks for me. Moral of the story: there isn't one. I just messed around with some idlers to the point where they got fed up and actually fought. I know that not everyone is willing to waste an hour to prove a point, nor should you. But just know that idlers do have limits to their patience, and its funny to push those limits if you can.
In all seriousness, though, idlers suck. Report them when you see them using the report tools; I did the moment I noticed they were being inactive. Testing their patience is superfluous.
Edit: video for entertainment purposes. This is where that obscure tag originates from.

  • Update: checked my Xbox enforcement record; someone reported me for "Unsporting" behavior since the last time I checked it. Betting it was one of the inactive players detailed in the story above. Lol.

  • I usually don't care unless I'm doing Heroic Strikes and will just continue on my merry way, happy that my useless teammates at least have the courtesy to be useless out of my way. In Heroics, if it's two of them just sitting there, I'll usually either leave (if I'm actually wanting to do stuff) or start messaging them asking how their day is going, lol. I've only gotten to do that a couple times, but sometimes the result is funny.

  • Bungie should permanent ban them. Especially if they were dumb enough to send those messages. There are no excuses then. This has been a problem with no fix since year one, and the reporting system is a joke. I have never heard of anyone getting punished for this and it's downright obnoxious. I stopped playing strikes because it got so bad where players would sit at spawn doing nothing while you clear the whole strike, then would hop on their sparrow and drive all the way to the boss room.

    • I once used Solar Wind to launch a guy off a cliff about 30 times before he came back to see himself being murdered over and over again. Then he teabagged and left..

          • Met one such creature t'other day...who I thought was a pal of my clan mate (who was too idle to go into his room to mic-up and preferred to text instead whilst sunbathing outside), whilst on the Heroic Saber strike. I was so busy doing work that I could only stare in disbelief at the static figure doing nothing- aside from an occasional twitch / jerk. Jerk indeed. It got so obvious that I almost reported him in-game, but, as it is not unusual for clan matey's 'friends' to be 'mic-free', I let it go. Anyway, we're now in the final room...and we two are 'working' hard just to stay alive... The creature didn't move, so, was getting zapped continuously, whereupon my clan m8 would risk all to get the revive, and he did, every time. This only compounded my view that the creature was his pal. Moving along, 2 of us got the boss to within a sliver of health, when the creature 'came alive' and popped a Golden Gun and shot the boss--it didn't kill it--but we two did shortly thereafter. Then the creature moves at speed to gather loot and exits the game. Then my clan m8 left, as I knew it was his last game of the night. I msgd him about the creature...it waa a random casual, and not a pal of his. I was boiling at this final piece of news: at my clan m8 for being a lazy fellow for not walking in off the lawn to get mic-ed up; and, at that creature for his/her deliberate AFK-carry - the parasite! I couldn't recall the tick's gamer tag so I couldn't report him/her post-game. I even trawled the Net to see if I could see my game history to I.D. the $&@#! - to no avail. Destiny Tracker gives all kinds of gen, but not the 'post-game list' as normally apoears after a game: at least, I couldn't find it. It still smarts....and for the life of me, I just cannot comprehend the type of creature that would blatantly sit back, deliberately, and let 2 team mates do all the work. The mind boggles... Fwiw: my clan m8 is young (early 20s)...and I am nearly thrice that. A good lesson was learned by me: unless I know the player, then, no mic = no game. And, "Oi, get off my lawn!!" 🤖

            • I want to believe this happened. Where do people like this get off, though? Who buys a game to sit there and AFK on people? What is the -blam!-ing point? Are you entertained just by watching a blue name move around behind a wall on your screen? Or are they so sad that they enjoy what little amusement can be gleaned from 'forcing' someone to carry you without your aid? Either way it must be a sad life for them. Good on you, OP. I would do the same if I had the time. Usually I just back out and requeue. Then again I hardly get messages from those players either, and I generally tag along with at least one other buddy if I'm grinding Strikes.

              • Report and move on to the next strike. And don't tell them you reported them- just do it.
