Possibly but I don't think the nine are humans. Xur is or was Jovian, and is somehow controlled by the Nine, his will is not his own, he is merely a trash collector for the nine, and what does he collect? Strange coins. It's implied through much of his dialogue that these coins have no value to the nine, they simply collect them. There is another species that likes to collect mountains of treasure that has no actual value to them, and that would be dragons, which in Destiny lore are called Ahamkara which we know have the ability to influence the will of others, even when they are dead and only their bones remain. So my theory is the nine are the surviving nine Ahamkara. Of course like your theory it is only that, time will tell if either of us is right, or both of us could be way off.

  • I'm totally rethinking my theory. However, where does Xur fit into the Ahamkara line of thought? Was he just a eco-friendly Guardian that was kicked out of the Tower for messing with the Vanguard? And what about his face?

  • He's Jovian, not one of us. His face is probably because he too has been resurrected without his will.. kind of like the taken, only different cuz it was done by the Ahamkara.

  • But are we certain that the Ahamkara are on the Jovian planets? They may be magical, but the pressure and gases on some of those planets are inhospitable. Besides, the only sighting is on Venus during VoG. They may be attracted by the Vault itself.

  • The sightings on Venus weren't Ahamkara, this was confirmed by Bungie, although there once was dragons on Venus before the Great Hunt. Where the nine are I do not know, what I was saying is that Xur is Jovian, which we know he is or at least was. The nine may be on Europa which is a moon of Jupiter that bungie is (or at least was) developing content for, or they might have simply found Xur there and enlisted him into this task.

  • But why would the beings we hunted to (near) extinction give us crazy powerful weapons? You know, aside from dragons probably not being able to use guns.

To gain influence over us maybe? We incorporate their bones into armour and that armour whispers to us. The vanguard decided the Ahamkara were too dangerous and the vanguard didn't authorize and indeed cannot control the comings and goings of Xur, though they likely aren't aware of who he serves, maybe the Ahamkara's goal is to turn us against the vanguard? Also the Ahamkara and the worm gods were enemies and the hive have been our main opponent thus far so it could also be simply that they wish to enable us to fight our mutual enemies.

I don't know if this influence thing make sense even with the fact that Ahamkara remains could whisper to us, if we consider that they sell a lot of different items and not just pieces made by their bones. In my point of view, the Ahamkara wants to destroy the Darkness too but they couldn't do it by themself as they are just nine beings after the "great hunt"... So, what about the guardians that were powerfull enough to destroy us in the past? Let's request some specific item (strange coins) that only could be aquired if you proof your skills and sell for those guardians some good item to help them. My theory is not so "deep" but I just thought this after read this topic... The Ahamkara being the Nine hidding their identities and purposes is a very acceptable line of thinking.

  • Yeah as I said it could just be a matter of the enemy of my enemy is my friend, or at least somebody worth arming if they are going to use the weapons against my enemy. Xur says the nine have no use for the things he sells and a dragon would have no use for guns or armour. Whether or not they also intend to gain influence over us or not is debatable for sure but we know they exert their will over Xur and while it is not the only weapons they sell, they do sell armour and weapons containing Ahamkara bones, and moreover before the great hunt it was said they would grant wishes but the price was considered too great which is what led to the hunt, what that price was we don't know but it wouldn't be unprecedented for them to bargain for some kind of influence over us and like the hive, the vanguard that ordered their destruction could be considered an enemy as well.
