I offer the inverse to your situation.
I am an average pvp player. Sometimes I wreck and sometimes I get wrecked. Since SBMM has been launched, I have been getting my ass handed to me left and right. My team went 0-5 11 times this week during trials. Nobody on my team has the lighthouse badge, yet the overwhelming majority of my opponents had 2-3 of such players. To me, this is NOT skill-based. It is shit and it is broken

SBMM is not a thing in trials that would be why.

ToO matches are based on # of wins primarily. Don't see other reason other than your team sucks brah

I only recently started messing around in trials. I avoided it like the plague because I knew I was out of my league and the lag would piss me off. The same has been happening in regular crucible as well. It's everywhere

Nah but trials is mostly wins based matchmaking. To be honest, the first match has been usually the hardest / sweaty match out of the whole trials run. Get practice in skirmish.

That's what I don't get. I am at the bottom as far as trials is concerned. I accept that, I am trying to get better. Shouldn't I be matched against the same "tier" players in trials, then? I understand putting me against tougher teams as the wins add up, but getting those wins to add up isn't easy when at the bottom. Not to mention the lag. I had a handful of matches, trials or regular, that didn't have any red bars. That is the biggest issue. I can't get better if the people I go against don't take damage or teleporting all over the place

Please tell me you aren't playing over WiFi then... As far as trials, rarely do I get smashed. You probably need a new / better team

I have to use wifi. Unfortunately, the hard line is in a very bad spot in my house. I almost always have a green bar, though.

There's your problem. WiFi and ethernet use different parts of the router and don't interfere with each other much. So if you have a ton of things on WiFi at the same time is gonna fùck you over.

I get that, which is why I only play when nobody is home or asleep. I have a damn good router though. I rarely have any connection issues on my end.

Wifi is fine in your circumstance. That shouldnt be your issue. Its the win based match making in trials then, you must just be getting unlucky and finding all the sweaty players. I have the opposite in trials. I keep finding all the 0.5 noobs lol

Must be. I had 3 matches go 9 rounds this weekend. I lost all 3 but they were fun as hell. The others, either 0-5, 1-4. Lag was out of control though. Is the lag always that bad in trials? This was my 4th week trying and by far the worst I have seen
