They have split everyone up into bands and match you with people in the same band. This may not be obvious for people in the top tier, but when you are lower down the rankings it is obvious when you are on the borders and move up and down between 2 bands quite a bit. I have seen multiple post which show this It depends a lot on how they split up the bands as to whether you are right about only being a few top tier players so you have trouble matching against them. If Bungie have split the bands so they have roughly an equal number of players then your argument is invalid. I haven't seen anything that says how they actually split the bands One of the things that can make a big difference is the time you play. If you play at times when people local to you are likely to be asleep, at work or at school the chances are that you will be matched against people on the other side of the world and you will see lag because of that I didn't play pvp much before and only started a couple of weeks ago to get some of my remaining quests finished. I don't see much lag and most matches I play I don't see any red bars and I have only seen 1 player who was unkillable because of lag. I am at the scrub level of competition so the chances are no one at my level is lag switching. Have you thought that the amount of lag may be because lag switchers are in the higher tiers of players (because they cheat to get there) so now you are seeing more of them

  • Yeah they could be putting us into bands. I beleive it goes off your ELO to be more precise. I usually play at times most local players would, so that shouldn't be a problem. I definitely have laggy games A LOT of the time, or at least 1 red bar dude... And lag switching is insanely rare. Also its lower skilled players who lag switch more. A good player doesn't need to. And your ELO is based off killing people- not lagging them out of a game...

1.The matchmaking system is a lot more complex than you are making, but yes, it sucks at the moment. I have huge problems being matched against people in under three minutes (if ever) and most games have a lot of latency. However, this 'ELO' you are blaming does not exist. 2. It's not ELO; the rating system is called Elo and is based off a chess player named Elo who invented it. Obviously the rating system Destiny uses is not knowable to the player base, but I can assure you that it's a far cry from the original Elo system; all it has in common is relative rankings of players and the math behind calculating expected scores and new rankings. Additionally, Destiny's hidden ranking system is not purely based off of kills. Every quantitatively track-able interaction you have in PvP affects your rating in relation to players you are matched against The guy who explained the 'bands' to you is correct about the most basic concept of Destiny's matchmaking system grouping you into particular player pools, and these groupings are different for every playlist. DTR is the best representation of your relative player rating that you have access to. 3. The whole 'red bar' thing is not an accurate reflection of two players' connections to one another. I don't know the sample rate from which the in-game visual indicator is based, but it's really inaccurate a lot of the time. By this I mean you may see someone who is 'green bar' who actually has a lot of latency and you may see someone who is 'red bar' who is fine at the moment. The best way to recognize latency affecting gameplay is to visually see it when you interact with another player in the Crucible.
