Just read through all of these, the Hive are more jacked up than I thought. It's awesome that TTK gave us a full backstory on the origins of the Hive too, very interesting read, and concept.
But the fact that somehow magically Aurash turned from a female into a male, yeah, interesting...

It's very possible that they refer to yhemselves as sisters in order to sow in their minds that they are weaker. Gender doesnt mean the same thing to them as us. When they found the worms in the fundament. They were called princes. But still called each other sister. Power over others is their goal. Existence is true. Non existence is wrong. Existence is assured through power. More power than your opponent. Thusly. The three will want to be more powerful than the other two. They will claim this even if its not true. The other two will always be sisters.

The default bee is a neuter female but if they are given "royal jelly" when they are babies, they turn into breeding queens. Bees can also make a limited number of males by feeding the male babies differently (I think). Or maybe the worms turned her male.

Many different animals change gender. Wether it be at a certain age or once they have grown to a certain size. Not that uncommon.

I don't think that the krill hive had a gender until a certain age, when if they hadn't eaten the slime to become a mother, they would be a boy

I think it had to do with different morphs (physical archetypes) of their original race. It seems they had a breeder caste, a soldier caste, and a "king" one as well. You have to remember that while humanoid, they were apparently quite physically different, at least in their original incarnation.
