The point Paladin is making is the in the US prices are always shown without the sales tax added as it varies from state to state. In the UK the prices must always shown with the sales tax (VAT @ 20%) by law (unless selling to tradesmen).
Therefore to properly compare like with like we should remove the VAT from the UK price and then convert to the dollar value.
