I posted a version of this inside another thread; given the super positive response to the poll attached to my commentary on Matchmaking, I thought I'd address the topic
Why nerfing is always a bad choice in game development
When faced with a situation where a few guns eclipse the general population in terms of use, The solution is never to take power away from gamers, but instead ADD power when there is a gap.
The gaming writer at Forbes must have read the reddit AMA/sub with the Blizzard team, because he pretty much quoted the same sources.
This is actually a good read:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2015/07/17/nerfing-gjallarhorn-and-thorn-is-the-exact-wrong-move-for-destiny/
Short version: always balance up, never down. Never make the player feel like they are being cheated.
Players should always feel powerful (like we did when the PVE buff was released for Shotguns...wow! What a fun week of using nothing but a gun that used to be useless!)
The threats of nerfs to Gjallarhorn are bad, but what's worse are the nerfs coming to two guns I've never seen one complaint about: Ice Breaker and Black Hammer.
It's claimed that they break the grind, and make elements of the game "shorter."
Let's be honest with yourself, Bungie: The older content is easy for one reason, and one reason only: player light levels are now at or above that of VoG and CE's hardest difficulty levels. It's not the guns, it's us, the players.
Maybe if Bungie slid in a few new difficulty levels they could appease those not feeling "challenged."
But taking away power from the players is just a cheap, easy way out.
Instead add new guns or buff existing ones like Dragon's Breath and Truth to make the gap smaller.
Buff the ARs and Fusion Rifles to make hand cannons and shotguns only one of several viable choices in crucible. Take the lens flare off of NLB to make it less of a joke, and more of a tool that is wielded by highly skilled players. Add perks that negate poison and health stealing to armor and/ or class items.
EXPAND the options, don't take them away.
That is how you make a great game that will live for a decade.
IMHO.

Please vote/bump/like if you want to be heard! And thanks for all the support with the matchmaking thread; together we can work with Bungie to make the game great!

1 ReplyI like your difficulties theory bumping in some more very hard levels on current raids would be awesome live Vog 34 and crota 34 would be achievable still but more challenging and also with the more difficult eaid loot drops are buffed up to compensate. Maybe even add new weapons into the raid loot tables for these difficulties power up bungie not down

One thing I learnt as a musician, playing in many different venues and having to do my own sound, is that you should try to have as flat an EQ as possible. During sound check, if the sound needed more bass presence, it was often more effective to cut the highs a bit rather than boosting the lows.

Agreed. Bump

2 RepliesThe nerf to Ghallarhorn, black hammer, and ice breaker are the dumbest ideas yet. The answer is new perks, new guns, buffs for other weapons to close the gap. Ghallarhorn is a pve weapon. Absolutely no reason to nerf it. Want players with ghally to play with others that don't? Sell the damn thing! They paid money for the game too and if they have played year one without getting to experience that gun, that's on you Bungie. You have ripped them off. It's not our fault, it's yours. I have 2000+ hours in this game but if you go through with this bull crap then I'm done. I won't buy taken King. I have too many other options for my gaming attention. Up yours, Bungie!

I would like this, but I'm not going to for not going with A Song of Ice And Fire for your subtitle. I mean Gjallerhorn is a SOLAR rocket Launcher after all it works. XD

Never had Black Hammer, and even though Ice Breaker was my 3rd exotic, the nerf isn't a huge impact. This'll slow time on the bullet sponge bosses. Yeah it doesn't seem right nvm
-
Bump! Pro buffs! Nerfs are silly.
-
1 ReplyHaha, all these people crying because they WANT an unbalance game. People are so dumb. Yes, let's leave it in the hands of some blog post writer who knows nothing about game development.
-
Bump. They should've increased Machine Gun damage pve wise, and buff some exotic heavys instead of nerf gally. If icebreaker and black hammer seemed op It was because the bosses were just dumb repetitive bullet sponges. Then again not our fault.

Edited by slavko: 7/20/2015 3:57:02 AMI agree with you, they messed up bad with this one. Iv seen a few polls now that offer solutions and some that are biased, so i crated a simple poll - Weapons Re-balance, Are you happy? its a simple question with simple answers, i invite people to have a look for it and vote.

2 RepliesIf they always buffed up then all weapons one eventually one shot there for solving aboslutly nothing

Keep on voting and bumping, regardless of your stance. Keep this post trending so it's at the top Monday morning when they roll in to work at noon! ;-)

Don't nerf Gjallahorn. Much better solution would have been to buff Truth and DB so that they were on a par. Dragon's Breath: add tracking. The real issue is that it is dumb fire. If it tracked it would be usable. 2nd, make the flare a sticky so that it attaches to the target and does damage over time. This would give DB an effect like the wolfpack rounds that do damage over time. Truth: already tracks, so it only needs a damage over time feature. Add a void vortex that sticks to the target and you're done. Now it has damage over time I hate how Bungie thinks the solution is to nerf things. If one weapon in a given category outshines the others, then buff the others to be on a par with the one. Nerf the single best heavy in the game? Really???

I wonder how much ppl would whine of all guardians life in PVP was tripled.
-
Dont nerf ghally just buff other weapons. If you keep on messing with peoples favourite weapons then people will stop playing the game. If you really are "doing what the community wants" then you won't nerf gjallarhorn
-
2 RepliesThe nerf is the answer because if you keep buffing things to match the power of the thorn everything will be killing you faster then you can even shoot a bullet
-
5 RepliesThe "Dont nerf just Buff" idea is the the dumbest most ignorant thing. If you buff the other weapons you increase the overall Time to kill in the game, which nobody likes. Black Hammer was basically an exotic weapon, now it fits more with other legendarys. IceBreaker is not meant to be the only gun you use throughout a mission. Bungie did a good job with the rebalancing. You people are just blind and are whining because your God guns arent going to be as Godly.

Nerf thorn. Just dat

Imo ice breaker and black hammer maybe even the gally need to go untouched

6 RepliesEdited by Ninja Master 35: 7/19/2015 2:51:28 AMThe main reason for this update 2.0 is to make all of your favorite year one weapons, not so great anymore, so that you might be more receptive of the year two weapons that will drop with TTK. This is made further evident by the fact that they are pretty much nerfing weapons across the board, even ones that didn’t need it. Of course they are giving other somewhat valid reasons for the update as well, but these are being used as smoke screens to hide the true intent of the patch. There is a lot that Bungie does not want you to know about TTK DLC, this is why we get no solid details from Bungie about it. Here are a few rumored things they don’t want you to know. TTK DLC will basically be a reset, with all new weapons to grind out all over again, they refer to these weapons as year two weapons. Also, neither legendary or exotic year one weapons will be ascendable. Bungie update 2.0 will nerf your year one arsenal to the point of being less desirable, it will then be easier for them to separate you from those favorite weapons when TTK drops in September. All of this is an attempt to make TTK, year two weapons a little more appealing than they would have been, had they not nerfed your year one gear. Why would they do this? The answer to this question is simple. Destiny lacks content, they withheld major portions of it to later release as high priced DLC. Being that content is lacking, Bungie decided that they want to reset progress and make players grind out everything all over again. They do this by introducing new year two gear, to make up for the lack of content. Many are ok with that and say it is expected from games like this. Others are not ok with it. Either way, Bungie should just fully disclose what their plans are and reveal in detail, exactly what new content players will be getting for their $40.

4 RepliesBetter to buff than nerf. Nerfing doesn't make me feel legendary, it makes me feel ordinary
