While I agree with some of this, the only end game that always gives you a reward is ToO if you go 9-0. I've run vault and crota many times where all I got was shards and energy, no weapons or armor drops.
Never did skolas when there were burns but the two times I've finished it communication is the key. First, take out all adds then damage skolas, rotate around the arena while doing this to keep enemies at a distance. Keep an eye on his health so that you know when the mines will spawn and only damage him to that point when the adds are all gone so it makes it easier to handle the task.
It's tedious but if you have a decent team that can follow those instructions it's not that hard, just takes some time.

Part of the problem is the time it takes. And the fact if you have to stop for whatever reason, you have to start completely over from the beginning again.

That I agree with, there should be a checkpoint at skolas but they have to figure a way to do it so people don't trade checkpoints like vault and crota, I think that is the issue with the checkpoints. They don't want people skipping to the end of a raid or event and just do that to get the rewards.

Which is fine. However, I think it is worse for the players the way it is now. The better thing to do would be have something in place, even if people cheat it a little bit. Nothing is more frustrating then being in the end and having a connection issue, real lif event at home where you have to stop, and all of your work to that point a complete waste. I don't understand Bungie thinking it is better to not have the CP.
