The Definition of Insanity...

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It's a cliche and not even really true, but it is an apt description of the Skolas fight. After banging my head against the wall for 3 hours last night, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm not the type to normally come to the forums to complain, but I feel it's warranted this time. For the record, I have beaten Skolas twice: once on the Arc burn week, and once last week (with a Warlock and Titan respectively). So I've beaten him both pre and post patch. Not to mention many hours of trying to do it both pre and post patch and failing. I know the strategy, I know the mechanics, I have all the right weapons, and I don't suck. I'm no MLG pro or anything, but I'm far from casual. I have no trouble completing any endgame content in Destiny. My issue isn't that the fight is hard, it is and it should be. My issue is that it isn't fun, it's frustrating. As an MMO veteran, I welcome the use of mechanics instead of bullet sponge bosses. I love that you have to communicate and work as a team to complete it. However, I feel that there is just too much for most teams to handle. Consider all the things to worry about: Skolas, the adds, the Devouring Essence, the Mines, the modifiers, and level disadvantage. None of these is any more concerning than any other, my opinion (and I stress MY OPINION) is that there are simply too many things to worry about for the majority of players, especially on teams with inconsistent rosters. The factor that annoys me the most is the level disadvantage. We had to deal with this during hard Crota as well, and even though that wasn't terribly difficult, I still feel it was a cop out. It's an artificial difficulty multiplier, and completely uncreative on Bungie's part. With such drastic penalties for being "underleveled" for a fight, like those that exist in Destiny as a whole, there really is no reason for any endgame encounter to be at a higher level that we are. I think even at level 34 it would still require teamwork and communication to defeat Sokolas and deal with all the other mechanics, but it would remove a lot of the frustration of being two-shotted by a random add. I think this would allow many more teams to complete the activity while not making it so easy that it's a joke. There is also the issue with the rewards. For such a grueling fight, there is really very little reward. You are not guaranteed any gear or weapons, and the treasure chests are no different than those in any other PoE encounter. For going 9-0 in Trials you are guaranteed an elemental primary, an exotic, and whatever other goodies you get out of the Lighthouse chest. It is very hard to go 9-0, so those rewards are appropriate. Defeating Skolas is also very hard, but the rewards are lackluster at best. Considering the way the rewards are currently in PoE, there really is no reason for the fight to be that difficult. There will be those that say the fight is fine as is, that the level disadvantage is just a part of the fight and we should just deal with it. I also expect a fair amount of "git gud scrub" and "filthy casual" remarks from the uncomfortably high percentage of immature people on the forums. My counter to the former is that Vault of Glass was hard, and fun, and rewarding, and there was no level disadvantage. The raid was level 30, and as long as you were level 30 you were on an even playing field. To the latter I will simply ignore you as I ignore the opinions of anyone not able to hold an adult conversation. I know Bungie will not change the Skolas encounter any further, and this is not some ultimatum that if they do not concede to my wishes I will quit the game.. I love this game, and I will keep playing it. My only goals in writing this are to vent my own frustration and hopefully find some other Guardians that feel similarly. If Bungie, by some random act of the universe, did read this, I would only ask that you consider those not it the upper echelon of gaming prowess when designing endgame activities. I am an MMO veteran so I understand that those types of activities should be challenging, but they should also be attainable by more than a small percentage of the player base. If you have no trouble beating Skolas three times every week, good for you. I truly am glad you have the skill and consistent team needed to do that. This post is not for you, and I hope you understand that in the end this is a game, and it should be fun. Right now, in my opinion, Skolas is not fun, it is a hot mess of frustration. I have a feeling I'm not alone in that opinion.

  • The skolas fight does need more rewards and it's stupid that PvP players get better guns in a PvE game for their endgame content. But if they made it any easier.. it would be too easy. It's already super easy. It just needs to match the trials rewards. Or the trials rewards should match the PoE rewards. You should get an exotic emblem for each, you should get an elemental primary, chances at shaders or armor, or.. the trials should match it at a couple motes a couple strange coins and a queen's wrath or shitty crucible gun.

  • I read the whole post...nice write up Some I agree(loot rewards are just bad) and some I dont(I think the Boss being a higher level is fine...players should be pushed to thier best to beat the Hard Mode stuff) But my first thought after reading this was...
And people want random matchmaking for PoE...that will be the day the Destinys forums are shut down due to flooding
• I'm glad I stopped doing Skolas after they removed burn modifiers. I got everything I want from PoE so there's no point in completing it every week.

          • I did it a few times. The rewards are terrible. A void hand cannon with dreg burn? gg. Why do I bother with it? It's not like I get something cool. I was just invited into a group by a guy on my friends list and he had been there all night. Literally all night. He had something like 1500 kills. It is ridiculous. The "oh we can make it hard by making enemies one level above you" bullshit is just that. Bullshit. Please please PLEASE try to develop true boss encounters, not just bullet sponge versions of regular enemies.

          • Biggest problem I have with 35 poe is not having a checkpoint. Having the entire group kicked because of connections, bungie doing maintenance, etc is ludicrous and needs to be addressed. It's happened so often with the groups I've played with that we don't consider the level 35 worth the effort.

          • While I agree with some of this, the only end game that always gives you a reward is ToO if you go 9-0. I've run vault and crota many times where all I got was shards and energy, no weapons or armor drops. Never did skolas when there were burns but the two times I've finished it communication is the key. First, take out all adds then damage skolas, rotate around the arena while doing this to keep enemies at a distance. Keep an eye on his health so that you know when the mines will spawn and only damage him to that point when the adds are all gone so it makes it easier to handle the task. It's tedious but if you have a decent team that can follow those instructions it's not that hard, just takes some time.

            • There are several problems with PoE 35. There are no checkpoints, so the entire thing HAS to be run in one sitting. There are no rewards throughout, just at the very end after finally Killing Skolas and hopefully nothing stupid happens that keeps you from getting to the treasure room. The rewards themselves are very sub par and not worth all the hassle you just went through. The Skolas mechanics are actually fun, for a while. But when that invincible reaver Captain takes out two team members in one swipe, while the survivor is tainted, after Skolas is at 15% health, and you have to start over, it definitely turns into a chore real quick. Unfortunately, the rewards at the end are pretty crappy. None of the elemental primaries are any good. They really are mediocre and in alot of cases, the Vendor weapons are better even without an elemental burn. That is just plain lame... VoG is fun, CE was fun at times, but PoE 35 is disappointing to say the least...

              • I think the fight on its own is fine but bungie should add a checkpoint when you reach skolas.

              • Only thing that frustrates me is what you mentioned regarding level disadvantage creating artificial difficulty. I'm all for the challenge and I've beat skolas several times pre and post patch. But using level cap to challenge us is just sheer laziness. Was mad about it for crota, mad about it again.

              • The best part is that when you do beat him, its for practically nothing since the rewards suck ass, and the primary weapons that you have a CHANCE of getting are horrible. Overall the skolas fight isn't worth the time or effort

              • The honest truth is, you can have a pretty crappy team and still beat it. The players control the fight. Everything is based off of his health percentage, the only way his health goes down is when you damage him. You decide when the adds spawn, you decide when you want the mines to spawn. You control this encounter, and once you figure that out, it's even easier.

                • That's not the definition of insanity. Common misconception though. noun, plural insanities. 1. the condition of being insane; a derangement of the mind. Synonyms: dementia, lunacy, madness, craziness, mania, aberration. 2. Law. such unsoundness of mind as frees one from legal responsibility, as for committing a crime, or as signals one's lack of legal capacity, as for entering into a contractual agreement.

                    • No point running it for me now. If the rewards were better I would still do it. The light is useful but I have most weapons/armour I want upgraded by now. Would be nice if the trials weapons (or similar) we're a guaranteed or even a high random chance drop. I would still do it then.

                    • I've beaten it post patch and I agree with you. I have to say though, if you didn't have an exotic helmet at the time, then a person's first time running VoG hard would've been underlevelled.

                      • While I do not necessarily agree with you on the encounter itself, I do agree that the rewards are lackluster. I have alot of fun doing Skolas, but unfortunately what you get for your time isn't so great. This week will probably be the last time I run it, it just isn't worth it to me.

                      • You are definitely not alone. Making endgame encounters 1 level higher than the maximum level of the players is just lazy, there is no other word for it. It seems like keeping us at a level disadvantage & random glitches is the only way Bungle can make anything challenging for us anymore. I'm not sure how the round modifiers are chosen but they need more thought put into them. Seriously, Small arms & Lightswitch is a joke. Not only do you hamstring our special & heavy weapons you then give our enemies the ability to 1HK us with their melee. Let the VoG team make the endgame content from now on, they are the only ones in your dev team who can make something good. VoG Heroic is still alot harder than CE heroic, once we were the same level as the enemies in Crota's end it has become a cakewalk. Pick up your act bungle....
