Having played MMOs, I think the ascending mechanic was a huge mistake. Don't get me wrong, I'm taking full advantage of it, but it makes it so there is little reason to progress. Just do PoE a few times and you're all but done with the expansion.
But as I was saying, coming from MMOs, gear becomes obsolete 2-4 times a year as you go through raid tiers. I don't know why we think Destiny should let us use the same gear indefinitely.
I mean really, as much as it could be nice to hold onto your favorite weapons, do you really want to use the same stuff for 10 years?

What I think they should do is combine the old and new method of upgrading stuff, you still have to get xp to unlock the upgrades, and have to ascend multiple times, however each ascension needs new or more materials than the last, that's just my opinion anyway but I feel like it could make it more worth while

I would agree if they would actually deliver on good end gear. Try to compare any end game hand cannon to fatebringer. They have yet to give me an incentive to use any other raid pistol, even before ascending, because the other ones are useless or ordinary. VOG weapons all had abilities that defied their class, like reactive reload and glass half full on a fusion rifle. No new weapons compare in usefulness. If the next top tier reward pistol is uniquely useful, I won't mind.

They definitely made the 1.0 gear too good and have been trying to scale back ever since. I agree that the new stuff is just uninspiring. Reforging has gotten me a few good weapons, but I still prefer my ascended VoG gear over the new raid gear. I guess if they're going to reset everything in TTK, it'll help with overall balance. As they can apply everything they've learned to new gear without having to deal with old equipment that was so OP it was broken. I personally think damage output in the PVE side needs a buff. Especially if massive swarms of majors is the new "difficulty." I definitely think they need to rein in the RNG a lot. I hate having so much BS gear and now I hate spending so much time reforging for decent perks. I hope they come up with ways to let us pick perks and assign stats or something in the future. Or at least don't entrust raid gear to RNG...

The old gear was unique. The new stuff is boring. I hate sacrificing fun for balance. Fatebringer feels amazing in pve without being broken in PvP. The reason I want to keep my old gear is that nothing new feels special. Its like comparing weapons from Borderlands to weapons from CoD. Sure the CoD weapons work fine, but there is something special about that borderlands weapons that make me prefer them.

I think some of it should be upgradable and some shouldn't. For instance.... Raid weapons and gear. I think you should always be able to upgrade even if I have to go back into said raids to get certain materials to upgrade them. For sure at least weapons. HoW doesn't give you as much of an opportunity to get primary's with burns on them. Trials and Poe are completely random drops for what weapons you get and then to add insult to injury getting them with a burn is random. I am in no way intrigued by having to rely on rgn to get new weapons I actually want to use as far as legendarys go. Unless they introduce a mechanic where getting certain items or materials let you add a burn to primary's.

I think it's outrageous how many weapons I've dismantled from Poe since release. You have to put tons of time into getting keys to open chests that give you almost zero reward. Then you do it in 34 to get a weapon core and those weapons are junk. Who the hell wants a non burn hand canon?

People aren't used to it because destiny introduced a lot of FPS bros to it.

This. FPS community has a hard time with the MMO style grind of raid tiers. I was a long time WOW gamer so my gear that I worked so hard for becoming obsolete is nothing new.
