To kill someone using a thorn with those weapons your enemy has to be a pretty bad shot. Of course this is depending on the range, only gun I see really competing with the thorn is red death but only because of the health regen. The thorn has the range of a scout rifle but it's true underrated perk is jarring the enemies focus with the green effect on the screen.
