After seeing so many people complain about thorn being too op and needing a nerf(even though it doesn't need one)I've decided to compile a list of weapons that could outclass thorn in a PvP battle. These are personal experience and weapon stat based.
These are in no particular order
1.Red Death
This exotic pulse rifle has great range, impact and rate of fire.It can kill guardians in two bursts, which would easily outclass thorn. It will heal you after kills,so it negates the DoT.Easily one of the best PvP weapons in the game
2.MIDA Multi Tool
Underestimated by most of Destiny's community, this beast can allow you to strafe easily and land crits. It can fire quicker than most other scout rifles, and with it doing about 55 crit dmg per hit,it can take down someone's health pretty quickly. If you have the aim, this thing will wreck in the right hands.
3.Spare Change.25
Carbon copy of red death.Except frees up an exotic slot.Kills in two bursts, and has great range and stability for a pulse rifle
4.Vex Mythoclast
While at medium to long range this gun cannot perform well,at close it's an absolute beast. Its high impact of a fusion rifle and it's fire rate proves it to hit hard.Since most of Destiny's maps are close range(example:Cauldron,Pantheon,Anomaly) it tends to have an easy time on most maps.Run with it and you will most likely win all of your 1v1s in crucible
5.Almost all Osiris exclusive primaries
These weapons are awarded to people who go undefeated in trials, and they're definitely worth it.While also being stellar PvE weapons, they have proved themselves in PvP.The jewel of Osiris has better stats than thorn(other than rate of fire)and can defeat it at close to mid range. The messenger, from what I've heard, behaves similarly to red death.Meaning that it can easily kill you in 2-3 bursts and it can fire quickly. The scholar is just another hard hitting low recoil scout rifle, which agains like the other two can outclass thorn. They were built for PvP.
Hopefully some people realize that there is more than one way to skin a cat,or that you can beat thorn without thorn
Edit:Necrochasm is apparently good too.I didn't say it.Some dude in the comments did
Edit #2:Cause the playas gonna play play play.H8rs gonna h8 h8 h8.Imma shake it off, shake it off.
Edit #3We are at 1000 replies.Let this thread die

Ive been countering the thorn with tlw and the oversoul pulse rifle from crota. Works ok. Found out yest that the best counter for thorn is another thorn. Holy fock the gun is op. I thought it didnt fit my playstyle of run n gun as well as the tlw did but let me tell you... Kept the same playstyle and just ran around hipfiring at anything that moves... Absolutely AMAZING results. Last two games in my history i played with thorn. All others before i played with tlw. Difference is undisputed.

3 RepliesI'm not very good at pvp but holding my own against thorns with Red Death in my first Iron Banner outing this weekend just trying to get a light at rank 3. I did a fusion bounty with Vex and it did fine too In regular crucible when I'm doing the occasional grind for marks I often use a couple rare weapons that go up against Thorn ok Handcannon: Polite Denial 0/1 - mine has LITC and Send it for a stupid amount of impact and range for a HC Pulse: Evergreen 11.1 - mine has a stability perk that maxes it out and has same impact but double the range of Red Death At some point during IB I had the Spare Change drop - looks like legendary version of Evergreen so looking forward to trying it out (I have Thorn and not opposed to using it - I like variety too much)

1 ReplyHigh impact scout rifles like LOTP and Salvation State are pretty good vs Thorn. I think Thorn is OP, and I would love to see it nerfed a teensy bit. That said, I thoroughly enjoy outshooting the these pain in the ass players with my scout rifle. When I'm not slowly dying from DoT, that is.

None of them are "stellar PVE weapons" None will ever replace your VoC, WoC, or Fang.

1 ReplyVendor-stock Three Little Words. Or any scout rifle with High Caliber Rounds. Hang back and bounce rounds off his skull until he dies or gets the message and retreats.

1 ReplyEdited by Robnkils: 6/8/2015 3:04:30 PMI know it's not a huge difference, but I wouldn't call Spare Change a carbon copy of Red Death. Both Spare Change and The Messenger actually do more damage than Red Death (i think RD does 33 damage on a crit shot, while the other two do 38- totaling 15 extra damage from one critical burst). They have a higher impact than Red Death, but they also have a slightly slower fire rate. Their advantage is that they can put a higher amount of damage on a target in one shot, but if you can nail your headshots and the enemy is at full health, Red Death would be the better option for you, as it still puts out enough damage to kill a target slightly faster than the higher impact pulse rifles. The 55A-Allfate that is sold by the Vanguard Quartermaster is more of a carbon copy of Red Death. If you want those faster kills, but want different perks than RD, then this one would be a good choice. I also would advise against the jewel, as it does the same amount of damage that thorn does, but without the DOT, and has a slower fire rate.

8 RepliesWhat about the 55.allfate,that pulse rifle is like the messenger but perhaps better since you can re roll it.it wrecks in iron banner even at 331 damage ,I'm thinking of ascending it.

3 RepliesEveryone needs to learn to use mida+dance machines. That combo destroyed in the ar days

Another thing that works, especially with vex and Crota pulse rifle, is to switch the controller setting to have crouch on the right thumb stick. You can basically tea bag whilst firing, like strafing but easier. Takes some time to get used too, but it works.

33 RepliesEdited by MisterNoop: 6/8/2015 5:35:57 AMThis is why Destiny's PvP is broken. Here you have people listing like 5 or 6 guns that can counter one goddamn weapon that is god-teir overpowered. What if you don't have one of those weapons? What's the point of being competitive then? It puts new players at a HUGE disadvantage since they can't posses these weapons. Where's the variety?!? A good PvP should be balanced and Destiny's is far from. Everyone is running around with the same goddamn weapons since they don't know how to have fun and give other players a chance and it absolutely ruins the whole PvP side to this otherwise great game. Basically if you try to use any weapon in Destiny, you'll find yourself saying, "it's not as good as Thorn, so what's the point?" Bungie ruined their PvP by making thorn, and by making the entire auto rifle class next to useless. Still disagree with me? Here you go: https://youtu.be/jP8USz7atmw

2 RepliesI appreciate this is a well thought out post, but if Thorn was balanced in the first place, there wouldn't be the need for a list of weapons able to compete with it (some of which I disagree with). 1) Red Death is a pulse with far less stability and is more difficult to use in close range. Not to mention Thorn actually has a better range than Red Death. Also, a gun's perk shouldn't be used for the sole purpose of countering another's in my opinion. 2) Although Mida is underestimated, it is not a match for Thorn..... Thorn (with Send it) has a better range than Mida, and for every Thorn headshot, a Mida user needs to land 2. Not to mention it requires far more accuracy and good strafing to beat a Thorn, meaning a players skill is more important than the weapon itself. 3) I can't comment as I've never used the weapon to be honest. 4) Outside of close range, Vex will get beaten every single time, and I still don't think it would win most encounters close. A Thorn user can land 2 headshots and simply back away, or die and let the DOT do the work. Not to mention you've missed out the fact that A LOT of destiny's maps are actually quite large, and suit Thorn's range far more.... 5) Jewel of Osiris does not have better stats than Thorn barring ROF. A Thorn has higher range with the "Send it" perk. Also, if Jewel has a lower ROF, how on earth is it supposed to beat Thorn? Thorn requires 2 headshots, Jewel requires 3........ the maths proves it wrong there. Regarding the other Trials weapons, Thorn has a higher range equaling the scout rifles, with a fairly high degree of aim assist. Most of your weapons are reliant upon a players skill rather than the weapon itself. Weapon balancing shouldn't even bring player skill into it. If a weapon is clearly better than its counterparts, from the stats alone, it needs to be balanced/nerfed........I can outgun a Thorn user with my Red Hand IX fairly often, I know which weapon is better though.

13 RepliesSuros is better than you think

You forgot 6: git gud skrub
-
4 RepliesThere should be more than 1 dot weapon
-
You forgot the best option...TLW. 2 players of similar skill one with TLW and one with Thorn and TLW wins more oft than not
-
Love my bad juju and gheleons in PvP Very much love my nlb
-
I've found the SUROS works very well against the Thorn. At worst, you kill each other. You've just gotta stay on your bicycle
-
I mop the floor against thorn players with Hawkmoon..
