Edit: you guys are killing my battery! Stop replying! Just accept you're wrong and move on. No one is perfect, not even me(though I'm damn close if you ask my girl friend) it's okay!! And yes I'm aware this will get me even more responses. Prove me wrong and shush! Fiiiine! Be jerks. I've disabled notifications for now. Sorry for trying to help you people!
They are heavy machine guns! This is how bungie even refers to them, not LMG!
Edit: this has been very entertaining, thank you all for making this my most popular thread evar! Keep it coming!
But okay, to address a few points that have been made:
First "in the military a machine gun of this size is called a LMG blah blah blah." Well LA de dah! Good for the military! This is not the military, this is DESTINY, a video game, not real life.
Second: "in real life an HMG is mounted on a vehicle or some other stable platform!" Again, this is not real life, this is a video game! Our HMGs are mounted! They are mounted on our big burly space magic wielding guardians. We are strong enough and magical enough we don't need them mounted! Also as a side note I'm curious what people think of the machine guns in Halo that were mounted. Did they go from HMGs when they were mounted but when master chief ripped one off did it become an LMG?
Third, "what about just machine gun, as that's what they are called in destiny." While yes, they are just called machine guns and I applaud your willingness to compromise, they are indeed still HMGs. The heavy part is implied because they go into the heavy weapon slots.
And finally, the quote from bungie, and they obviously know more about their own game than you folks:
HMGs
· Improved HMG projectile networking.

Keep it coming though, I appreciate all the responses even though the vast majority of you folks are wrong. :)
Edit 2: also, yallerhorn, not gallerjorn! And "a lot" not "alot" while I'm educating you guys.

Machine guns are typically mounted and lmgs can be carried. They probably used hmg because people get confused and call auto rifles machine guns. Really auto rifles are sub machine guns because they lack the range required for it to be called a rifle. Suros may be an auto rifle but fast firing guns like atheons epilogue are more akin to submachine guns.

Some of us were in the military there dipship, so for us it's second nature to call them light machine guns.
-
Military here and I say that in Destiny they are considered Heavy Machine Guns even though one would think light like a 249 saw, etc. The weapons as they are in destiny are considered heavy with the likes of the 50cal. Etc. I don't care what you guys call them though , does it really matter lol
-
LMGs are my favorite PvP heavy
-
Ya wtf guys? You think this is a game?
-
Call them how I want to call them. Thats my freedom of speech. As long as the audience knows what im talking about

I'm not sure why I'm letting myself get dragged in to this but... Just because destiny uses "heavy" in reference to their selection of LMGs, doesn't make them any less of an LMG! It's as stupid to say someone's "wrong" for calling thorn a revolver. We all know that all "hand cannons" in this game are actually revolvers and not miniature cannons. Just because a GAME calls something by a certain name, doesn't mean we all have to deny what we know. If it looks and acts like an LMG, it is an LMG. it's not like you put "light ammunition" in an LMG, you put heavy ammunition in an LMG. You can be as ignorant as you want to be (it is bliss, after all). Just don't get mad at smart people.

An HMG is a Large Caliber Machine Gun Thats mounted on a Vehicle or Controlled by a team. Common examples of an HMG is the M2 (.50) An LMG can also referred to as a SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon), which can also be mounted and used by a team or a single person. Common examples are the M249 (5.56) and the M240 (7.62) The weapons in Destiny aren't exactly specified, so it could be lead to Self Interpretation.

Edited by Dunit118118: 4/2/2015 8:42:59 PMYou say it's just a game so they can be called HMGs and it doesn't need to match real life but by that logic they could be called goat simulator and it wouldn't matter Your own argument for them being called HMGs is its own down fall Good job sir " that goat simulator is OP"

Man those are so much more better then those Light Rocket Launchers (LRLs)! I wonder what Rocket Launchers (RLs) are like?

You.......are a moron. Pay attention in class instead of writing this useless crap.

Edited by NIHNJAHMAHN: 4/2/2015 7:34:18 PM
A light machine gun (LMG) is a machine gun designed to be employed by an individual soldier, with or without an assistant, as an infantry support weapon. Light machine guns are often used as squad automatic weapons.
and It's actually pronounced "Gyallarhorn" (the "g" isn't silent) and they are by definition Light Machine Guns, but since it's the Heaviest weapon a guardian carries at a time, it goes in the Heavy weapon slot. So it is NOT a heavy machine gun, its just a machine gun in destiny, not a "HMG" or "LMG".
