People Quitting in Crucible

This is some constructive feedback for Bungie with regards to people quitting out of Crucible matches, and in particular, Iron Banner matches. I’ll begin by saying that I think offering Medallions of Iron was helpful in reducing the number of people quitting out of Iron Banner matches. However, like many of Bungie’s patches, this addresses symptoms of underlying problems rather than dealing with the root cause(s). There are three main reasons people quit out of Crucible (or IB) matches: 1) Their team is doing poorly 2) Their team is at a disadvantage (numerical or geographical) 3) They personally are doing poorly (irrespective of other factors) Bungie can’t do anything about #3, but it can absolutely help with the first two. Matchmaking should be better, with an eye towards fairer team matchups. Breaking up unfair matches after the fact is like purchasing a fire extinguisher after the house has burned down. As it currently stands teams are split up after a one-sided game, but often these ‘pieces’ are simple reassembled into the same group of 12 with only 1 or 2 players actually rotating out. In Iron Banner in particular there is no reason that a team should have 3+ level 28 (random) players together. Especially if the opposing team is wall-to-wall 32’s. The second problem has to do with geographical (dis)advantages: many of the Control maps are unbalanced. This has been a problem since day one, and many people (including myself) have offered ideas on how to fix the maps. Ironically, the only map that was noticeably altered was Blind Watch, and the changes were cosmetic. This is one step back and two steps back. Blind Watch, Firebase Delphi, and Shores of Time are all unbalanced in several ways. Asylum in Control is the worst offender by far, but at least it hasn’t shown up in Iron Banner playlists yet. Re-balancing the maps would go a long way towards reducing unfairness and its perception among the player base. TL; DR: Fix your matchmaking. Fix your maps.

  • The jokes on them anyways... They dont get s h i t for being sore losers... Losing team still gets rep and marks... Plus everyone who finishes has a chance to hit an exotic after the game... Im sure you've seen a lot of those... So dont sweat it man... Win or lose, its just a game... You truly wanna focus on winning, put an lfg group together... Aside from that, if youre by yourself, just do the best you can and don't worry about the outcome...

  • I've definitely quit rounds for reasons 1 and 2. I feel shitty about, and I try to stick it out if I'm just sucking but the team is still chugging along...but when a Control round is spiraling out of hand due to the other team having a map advantage, or I'm in Crucible and just plain outskilled by half the other team, I have no incentive to stay and keep getting my ass kicked. Halo was great about having a quit penalty, and having skill-ranked matchmaking. I am continually disappointed that Bungie has not implemented a similar system in Destiny. There's still time, guys! YOU CAN DO IT! Great comment OP, thanks.

In IB 6 on 5 might be ok but if it goes below that maybe it should reset or a random player who is not part of a fire team gets flipped so it's 5 on 5. I also don't understand that if bungie says that 3 levels below you can still do damage in IB, then why doesn't matchmaking limit players to that 3 level range? Someone posted on another thread saying group it to 21 - 24, 25 - 28, 29 - 32. Shouldn't be that hard to do. Aside from that I think people just deal with the maps and adjust their tactics. The lag is horrible sometimes though.

      • I agree hold heartedly dude! Great post! And i commend you for staying far more calm than i have on this subject hahaha great post and great ideas i hope bungie will listen because this game can be great its just simple stuff like matchmaking thats killing this potentially amazing pvp experience. Again great post and keep up the pressure!

      • I really suck at pvp, but I have enjoyed IB. Most of my games I had a positive kd. I have managed to reach rank four. I didn't think I could do that. I'm not saying that it doesn't have problems but for me personally I feel like I have accomplished something.

I leave matches for the reasons you stated but also because the atrocious lag or people using lag switches. When weapons are unbalanced. This happens to my friend and I quite often, we run into enemies using the same weapons as us or even weaker weapons but their's always outperforms ours, even when we're getting head shots constantly. Going into a game on a losing team when the match will be over in less than a minute or when there is obviously no way of winning.

      • I completely agree. However - it is worth bearing in mind that an awful lot of people who appear to be quitting are actually just being kicked by the glitchy servers. I know I've lost connection during several games.

      • I only usually quit when I'm put in game with only a few minutes left, and my team is getting smashed. Nearly 99% of the time when you join a game part way through, you get put on a losing team.

The main reason is lag, for me anyway. I don't see why i should keep playing, when players on the other team are rubberbanding, absorbing point blank shotgun blasts, charging fusion rifles in less than a second, surviving grenade sticks, not see showing up on the radar, teleporting, I can keep going. That is neither fun or competitive. That is why I quit, not because I'm grumpy about losing, and I'd wager that's why a lot of other people quit too.

          • I only leave because of shit teammates. I don't mind losing if the enemy team simply outplayed me, but losing because my team refuses to cap points or defend them pisses me off to no end. So if I see a match leaning in that direction, I leave in order to keep my sanity.

          • They have to get the lag issue sorted out before they try to punish someone for leaving a match If I'm dumping mags into someone and there not taking damage In not sticking around to get screwed! It's a huge problem and seems to be getting worse instead of better

            • And if your opponents know the spawn points they set up campers in that area to wait till you spawn in and take you out before you can take three steps, it happen to me three times in one match.

              • Crucible and its setup just breeds and forces the same exact style of play for everyone not variety , if I'm in crucible or ib it's to do bountys such as doing the thorn and bad juju ones together last night then I'm getting out of there as just too much crap going on it it and apparantly everyone but myself is using dial up

              • Yeah, I rarely ever quit but I had no choice to several times this week for these issues. If it wasn't the lag it was being unevenly matched(like being brought in in the middle of a match. Blind watch and firebase are 2 of the most unbalanced maps and seems to be the only ones on rotation. Iron Banner is a great concept but really just seems to be a chore at anything past level 3. As for a resolution, we need better servers to support the high traffic. Something we need to do as players is find a group who is competitive and communicates. When I join a fireteam we always do well. Raids require it and IB, in my point of view, is the PvP equivalent.

I never play with a fire team. 75% of the matches are competitive. I outscore a lot of 32s. The medallion is an awesome consolation prize, no one should be losing 6 times in a row haha. And not only that, you cash out all your medallions with one win, instead of one win per medallion like they could have done. Lag was only noticeably bad in the games I played on the PS4 Wednesday night. Too many exaggerations on the forums.

                • The maps are what really bugs me. In practically every single IB map if you control/start at one of the zones you can easily capture/defend another one. It's very, very possible to still a secure a win starting at the bad side, but it's a needless disadvantage. There will always be people leaving in regular crucible when there aren't any real rewards and losing isn't fun, but medallions keep most people playing in IB unless it's either really bad or off to a horrible start.
