Fixing Destiny Part 2: The Big Bad RNG

I like this idea

I have another suguestion

This is part 2 of my own Fixing Destiny Series. Before you read this one, I stress for you to read http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/73698720/0/0/1 this one first, as it explains what this is all about. Also, If you want to message me personally, Search for Godin Intaki on Skype. So, RNG. I'm on the fence about it. Low level, and intermediate level gear are fine as mainly RNG drops. People are going to be out in the field most of the time trying to get higher levels. As they level up, they will get stronger items, so it actually works.Resources (like spinmetal for regular enemies, and ascendant materials for bosses) are fine as well, as as you're naturally going to be killing enemies and bosses (if not, you're not really playing the game), and that cuts down on having to do farming paths, but rather, you can just play the game. HOWEVER, making it to where the only way to get better items, especially in the endgame is through RNG is ridiculously stupid. Think about this: I've been on my main a lvl 28 (almost 29, just decided to stop waiting and is grinding out iron to get to 29) for weeks now, as I have to rely on RNG to get my raid gear to hit 30. Also, There's two exotics I wanted since the start of the game: Pocket infinity, and The Last Word. Both I have to get lucky just to even get (and worse, I have to get lucky 11 times for PI, seeing one of the parts of the bounty is to get 10 rare Fusion Rifles, and I for weeks now have been doing so, yet still is not done with it). There's no way to find the guns, no way to start a decent bounty that doesn't rely on luck, none of that. It's based on how lucky can I get. That would mean that I could technically never get either gun, even with 10 thousand hours of game time, I still could never get them. That needs to change. there needs to be a structured path to get high end content that doesn't rely on just pure luck (And just to be clear, I don't think that they should be removed, as an option, but rather, not be the only option). I would suggest that Raid Gear and Exotic gear gets vendors in the tower, and you could earn a special currency (say doing generic exotic bounties or weekly tasks to get "exotic marks", or earning X Raid token from doing a specific Raid, earning them after each checkpoint, and finding them in chests), where all (maybe most, and have some as special missions or strikes, or even raids, and completing them gives said exotic or raid gears) of the gears, and you could buy them just like you would for Legendaries through faction vendors. Fixed. Now, everyone has a chance to get a exotic or raid gear or weapon (and of their choice) if they work for it, and if you get lucky, you can still get one through RNG. Everyone is happy. Discuss Peace, Godin EDIT: After to talking to some people, I have come with this: The raid idea from above is fine. However, the exotic one is not. Rather than having just the weapons, he would sell exotic bounties. However, the full lists for both would stay. I would also consider building a new part to the tower (or maybe use the event area) to have these vendors (the raid and exotic vendors) in, as otherwise, over crowding of vendors would probably occur.

Read title and that's all. So....why is this Part 2, not part 1? ;)

  • You assume that RNG means "purely random". This is not always accurate. For example, in Diablo 3 they instituted a "pity timer". It ups your chances of getting a Legendary item based on how long it has been since your last drop. We have no idea what kind of parameters are in place in the RNG of Destiny to feed high level players with gear. Among the group of people I play with, none of us have gotten shafted. Perhaps I haven't gotten every gun I'd like to see but I've gotten a pretty decent amount of Legendaries and Exotics. There might be guns in the game that I never get. I played Borderlands 2 for a combined total across all characters over the course of about a year and a half of about 41 days. I still have never gotten a Shreddifier Assault Rifle. I'm not bitter about it either. That's just the way RNG systems work. If you don't have the time to grind, you aren't going to get everything you want. Other than a few edge cases, I haven't seen any strong evidence that there is really anything wrong with the RNG system this game employs. Perhaps it could be tweaked a little, but I don't see where it fails so spectacularly that you need a direct path to the gear you have your eye on.

    • If bungie is going to have RNG raid rewards, they should let raid give rewards more than once a week. Cause right now it's: shards, wait a week, more shards, wait another week, 3 weeks later and one piece of raid gear. That is a stupid system, especially considering max level can only be reached by getting raid gear. Bungie has essentially made levelling RNG.

      • The RNG simply SUCKS .. I dont mind it being SLIGHTLY random... However 1. Stop dropping items DOUBLE untill ALL ITEMS are recieved 2. Dont drop shards after defeating end boss... or energy for that matter 3. Put in more TRIGGERS ... IE ... defeated 300 enemies in Raid Hard gives you Vex Mythoclast.... so simple to programme and so FAIR ... 4. Make it possible to TRADE gifts at the end of a Raid between players I have 3 chars all lvl 29 all waiting for that final piece of Raid gear... I know I should have played IRON BANNER... however per char I finished Raid I think a minimum of 6 times... and also many HARD runs... yet still not one lvl 30 character... it starting to SUCK bungie

I couldn't agree more (see post http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/72831496/0/0). Hawkmoon is the only exotic weapon I want and it's just sucks so much knowing there is no way to work towards it except relying on luck. FYI you can buy the rare fusion rifles from gunsmith

            • Think about this: Your bitching about not being level cap with in the first month and a half the game is out yet others are. The problem is not in the game but your ablity to play it right. you have 7+ days on your hunter yet you fail to see that to increase your odds of leveling you should of made a 2nd or 3rd hunter to reach the level cap faster. Don't blame the game for your short comings.

              • As stated in the last post, customization is the answer to so many current questions in Destiny. I would say modeling the Enchant and Transmogrify systems of D3:RoS would be the way to go. Love the Raid currency idea as well. Also, harvestable materials (Spinmetal, Helium, Iron, Spirit) should give double what they currently do IMO. (2 or 4 rather than 1 or 2.) Farming is easily the least-fun part of Destiny, and needs to be scaled back as a requirement to progression. I understand the developers want you out there touring their areas and exploring the game, but it needs to be less forced.

                • Some may have said already, but the gunsmith occasionally sells rare fusion rifles. I had two in my vault and bought the other eight, iirc. You can check his stock online too, no need to physically go to tower or log in. Other than that, Raid currency is the obvious solution. Good post.

                  • My biggest issue with RNG has been the raid, I've been level 29 for 3 weeks now. Just last week I got my FIRST piece of raid gear, that was after 4 or 5 runs... This week I've gotten up to 8 complete runs (and a couple on hard) and I STILL haven't gotten the freaking raid leg armor. Getting redundant drops is by far the most annoying thing in the VoG. I feel like the fix for this would be simple, when you're getting the roll for your rewards, the algorithm would see what you have equipped, and exclude that from your possible rewards. Even if it just moved that percentage chance all the way down the line to shards/energy that would be fine. But if I get the -blam!-ing class item or Chatterwhite ONE MORE TIME, I'm going to throw myself off a cliff!
(and then respawn 5 seconds later XP)
A clanmate of mine has gotten raid arms FOUR times. Yes he can shard them, but still. He was "lucky" enough to roll into the armor tier of loot, I feel like that should be enough to reward him with something he actually needs. Other legendary gear can be "quickly" acquired through marks, and exotics purchased from Xür. But if you're gonna leave something completely up to RNG, can you please at least make it intelligent RNG? Just my thoughts. Signed, Waiting for Raid leg armor, ETA unknown

                          • Just an aside for the pocket infinity bounty: your best bet is to find the gunsmith selling rare fusion rifles. He did so Monday from 4pm to 7pm Pacific time. That was when I was able to finish that sectionnof the bounty and the 200 nightfall kills with a fusion rifle was just grindy after that. So you really only have to get lucky twice, as long as you have enough glimmer.

Well seems like Destiny wants you to play the game for as long as possible, so you have to come up with a suggestion that would keep players playing this game longer. My suggestion is that player should be able to buy raid gear after completing the raid (possibly on hard). The raid gear will be available to buy from the corresponding faction at Rank 4. Each piece of raid gear will cost 200 vanguard marks. The reason I propose this solution is because it uses a currency the game already has, it's time consuming, and most importantly it rewards hard work + time that the players put into the game. Since raid gear is only available at Rank 4 it will prevent players who have multiplayer characters from exploiting the vanguard mark currency since they most likely won't have all 3 characters at Vanguard Rank 4, but if they do then they probably deserve the gear anyways. Since each piece costs 200 vanguard marks then at the least most players will have to wait 2 weeks to buy the piece of equipment they want. This should typically keep players pre-occupied for 8-12 weeks, and possibly 2 weeks at the least if someone puts in enough effort to reach to Vanguard Rank 4 with multiple characters. With each new raid that comes out they should make the raid gear available from different factions. This way people spend more time on the game trying to level up different factions instead of just trying to level up one faction so they can get all of the raid gear. Following up on that idea, to prevent players from exploiting that system, the higher level raid gear should only be accessible to players who meet a level requirement or have proof of beating raid that corresponds with the gear. This way people have to beat the raid in chronological order, and they would need to spend time trying to get the lower level gear before obtaining the higher level gear.

                                    • I would just say increase the drop rate of the raid gear that's about it cause you can still dismantle it for shards. For exotic weapons I would just say increase the choices to 5 different bounties and have all exotics but the Vex.As then you get more choices of weapons that you want use instead of what's available to you.

                                      • Why not have the boss drop materials, which you use to make a weapon of your choice? Then you're not left with a raid sniper if you wanted a hand cannon. Jt would make much more sense and flow better with the game. Similar to the monster hunter crafting system, if you will. (I always loved that crafting system).

                                        • RNG just doesn't work for "end game" content. I would rather have to dismantle weapons and gear that I got in the VoG for the ascendant materials; as opposed to having to rely on RNG to give me the weapons and gear when it heavily favors ascendant materials. RNG in Destiny is broken.
