I don't understand why posts like this come up so often but here we go again. I think I have repeated myself 1000 times now and here it is for record 1001:
Why do females play as male characters sometimes?
It's not a one way street here.
Games are meant for fun, fantasy, and living outside of your own experiences in life/doing something new. Anyone who ever says a female playing as a male character or vice-versa secretly wants to be that gender or 'has issues' is delusional and the one with personal issues. They worry so much what other people play as it's funny. Not saying this to you directly but I've seen that sad argument many times and like to put that fire out.
You are female and enjoy playing as a male or female character, this is the same reason probably why males enjoy using the female characters, trying out the opposite. My girl friends (not friend as in a relationship but actual friends) also choose male sometimes but other times choose a female character. Whether you are playing as a male character for that 'man candy' or just like to there is no wrong reason why. I'm part of the Skyrim modding community and a lot of females play female characters still. Many people think a lot of those skimpy armors come from horny males but the reality is many female modders are the ones making them too. It's amazing what perspective can reveal and make you realize it's not all black and white with males playing as females and females playing as males in games.
As for me? I will always play a female character if the game gives me the option. I'm not going to reveal my gender on b.net but it's beside the point. I find female characters just more fresh and in having a female lead role is more exciting to me. I relate to them a lot easier as well. I'm tired of the typical bulky male always doing stuff. This is why I enjoy games like Tomb Raider, Remember Me, Alice: Madness Returns, and Final Fantasy 13, and Alien Isolation that have strong female leads. I find that attractive and also something new seeing a female character take on the task. Don't get me wrong though some games like Deus Ex Human Revolution Adam Jensen is the PERFECT role for that game and I'd never want a female for that game but most games that offer the choice it will be female for me.
Guys are probably just as tired being a guy as a female is being female and games give a different outlet to play the role watching a different viewpoint they aren't so used to. Where it's for the literal visual stimulation or they enjoy making a background for their character it's all about fun. Games are fun so why not make your character unique as well?

See gender confusion.

I second that.

I like this better than what I wrote, and strongly agree with strong female leads

You don't have to want to be a strong female lead to support them...

Thanks for your well-written answer! I brought this up because I've never seen a thread like it, and (as I've said) wanted some insight from those who could give me some. Personally, I have always and will always play as a female, because I want to represent myself. That's why I loved FFXIII (and FFX-2, but you didn't hear it from me *wink*) because, as you said, bad-assed female protagonist (don't even get me started on Fang..) Cheers!
