The Lifeless World and Environment of Destiny

I agree and wish to see changes made

It doesn't bother me either way

I disagree and wish to see no changes made

To start I have to say that Destiny is a really, really pretty game. It looks for all intents and purposes fantastic. However the environment/world so far has been boring, extremely boring. Environment The maps and environments the players play in are seriously sterile and lifeless, the player can’t interact with it on any level whatsoever and nothing changes no matter how much time has passed or what happens. The best example of this is where you can see the Fallen and the Hive duking it out in the areas of the Cosmodrone. Sure they are fighting each other, in the same places however they do nothing else but give us something to shoot. You don’t see which side wins, there aren’t corpses littered around, you don’t see them disposing (or absorbing) their dead and because no one ever wins there are no effects on the environment. Imagine the Fallen cleansing the area of the hive presence when they win while observing the toxic effect the hive previously had on the environment retreat as the Fallen become more present in the tunnels and set up a serious base of operations. Only to have the hive emerge from right underneath them in a surprise assault which defeats/displaces the fallen and watch the environment undergo another shift where the barnacles and green miasma of the Hive spread into buildings and the general area. Instead we have a few units that run out and shoot each other over and over again where we could have a wonderful, interesting and intricate cycle. Also there is legitimately nothing to find in the environment except a chest or ghost here or there (and spinmetal) players should be able to scavenge things from dead guardians (not PCs), old supply caches, supplies guarded by enemies etc. There is none of that to be found here which makes adventuring/ killing never ending re-spawned AI’s unrewarding. Scavenging in this setting makes sense and for gameplay it fits in for exchange and glimmer purposes.
The use of only one unchanging map “for everything” should not occur. Ever. I really do hope we come back to earth and unlock even more areas to enjoy so we have some variety but for now we have been in the same map for many separate missions (and raid of sorts) going in slightly different directions each time. All of these missions should have really been clumped together namely finding the ship and the warp drive and finding the hive then activating the array. This would help improve player interest in going back to these areas.
Lifeless The NPC’s in this game are glorified vending machines or seemingly do nothing at all. They have exceedingly little substance with only a fragment of personality given in their dialogue, I have no reason to care about the various groups that have vendors in the game or their views as their missions consist of two sentences in free mode that involve collecting or killing things that have no impact on their dialogue, actions or environment. What you do is folded out of existence never to be heard again until you repeat that same mission
and considering we just came back from the dead this is the perfect opportunity to allow the player to ask questions or inform us of these things while interacting with characters we will be seeing often.
Your enemies have no purpose whatsoever. They stand around, looking around places for no reason and then defend them to the death like they are somehow important (none of them actually run away or escape). Killing on sight is ok for some but the Fallen are a hit and run race that are supposed to utilise agility to fight yet they stand out in the open most of the time and are not agile in any sense of the word (they can also scale walls really well but I have yet to see that actually implemented in their AI). All in all these reasons kill any intention of going back to explore because you already know exactly what it will be like and know that it hasn't changed since you last saw it.

  • Unfortunately I believe that while that is an amazing idea, Bungie simply can't put it into this game. At this stage the most I see them being able to do is add more environment that maybe moves around, allowed the AI to interact with other AI more and actually able to KILL the other AI etc... Other then that, what you are talking about would take more time in development stage. Great idea though for any add-ons or next game.

    • I loved the beta, I put c as my choice and I'll give you a simple reason. I loved the beta. I like the way that you can go kill and get items from people or go take the easy way with money. Now I'm not defending this claiming everything will change because its in beta stage, at this point they can't change much. I believe that the more you go it will change. That changing world may come on the moon and they made earth easy, that's why its lifeless. I have more hope that there will be more. I hope your wrong about this is what it will be every where because that would suck. Its the first few mission and first planet, call it wishful thinking. But I hope you are wrong so that the game is awesome like I'm praying it will be.

      • Some very good points there, I back you up on all of them, when I was playing it felt like something was missing, I wanted to get drawn into it more, there wasn't anything loring me into this story.

      • I agree with this completely, the only thing that seems to change are the chest loot spawns, which I could make a detailed map of all the spawn locations already. I severely hope that other planets/areas aren't the same as Old Russia.

You ready.......ITS ONLY A BETA RIGHT NOW. They aren't going to put as much stuff as you and EVERY BODY ELSE I've seen bitching wants to see atm. The whole concept behind a BETA is to find issues, receive CONSTRICTIVE feedback, and see what can be fixed removed or added when THE ACTUALL GAME IS RELEASED. Quit bitching, be patient and see how the FULL game is and works before talking negatively. If you are unable to do so the you are welcome to NOT play and NOT post ignorant pointless shit cause no one is forcing you to do so

I sure hope there will be more npc's outside the tower/last city. From what I've seen in Old Russia, there are only enemies to shoot in the world and no small camps/villages with friendlies in it. I could imagine there being groups of people not wanting to live in the last city, for several reasons, and thus go exploring and building new villages or outposts. Maybe it's just not located in Old Russia, maybe it's left out in the beta, but i sure hope there will be npc's in the 'open' world ready to give you missions and such. Would be way better than only having the beacons on the explore map to give you missions. .. Oh and having multiple missions active at the same time would be great aswell.

The beta is like a small chunk of the final game, yup so it's correct to analyse and scrutinise as if it were a demo of the final game... However I'd expect the open plains of old Russia to be bland and lifeless in this setting. If it were a single player rpg I'd hope for more life, more distractions and more to do but as it's a "shared world shooter" I think your fire team and other online players are meant to fill that void. Shooting, looting and levelling with other players is the name of the game. For that you just need spawning enemies, public events and side missions to keep you busy. With bounties and glimmer to gain I can explore that same Cosmodrome again and again and always have something to achieve. When the full game is released all those hidden areas and high level areas will be open and it'll bulk it out further. One thing I agree on is the enemy spawns. Their behaviour is predictable and samey. I'd like to see alternating spawns. Eg. First time they land near building A and try to turn it into a den/barracks, they could place a barricade and place a flag... You can attack it, break the destructible barricade, kill every enemy and hold square button to remove flag. Bonus points for doing each. Next time they spawn, they appear in a different area close by and lay attack into another enemy altogether, so we get one of those crossfire battles we can intervene in. Next time they spawn a little bit further away and start patrolling a road with shanks patrolling and dregs guarding a Captain with a couple of those camouflaged snipers scouting the flanks. Means you can't just lob one grenade and wipe then all it in 20secs like usual. Make full use of the enemy AI and give us players more engaging situations to find. And have this cycle on a random loop so they're unpredictable and it mixes up the gameplay. Just an idea of how to make more of what there is currently in place. Rather than expecting wildlife or NPCs running around, because as I said I think we are meant to fill that void. I think as well that the further you develop in the game, exploring free roam will just be a small part. Raids, strikes and the story campaign will be the meat and bones of it. Exploring, public events and that sort of stuff will be seen as a bonus feature. Then the PvP as another game mode entirely. Well get plenty of content anyway in the full release to make the game world feel more alive.

          • While I totally get the apocalyptic setting that old russia is supposed to have but what I didn't like about it was how even though you're moving to different parts of old russia they all look like slightly altered variants of each other often I run into the same exact(or ridiculously similar) geographic features or structural layouts, which completely shattered immersion. I also think it would be AMAZING if there were things that added to the lore or feeling of an actual world (like you said about seeing the aftermath of other skirmishes).

            • I completely agree about the lifeless world. It's the same problem I have in most MMO's. ESO, SWTOR, etc.. They have this huge detailed environment, but theres nothing to do in it. There is nothing to explore. They need to take a look at some games who have excelled at making the environments fun. Take a look at Skyrim's open world. much more immersive. Bungie needs to add some elements to the worlds for sure.

              • It won't be like this in the final release. Is it not clear that the beta is not a finished game? It seems obvious to me. An idea I had is that they could release a weekly patch or something to give us a new quest line to look forward to. That way every experience is truly new. There wouldn't be repeated or reused quests. It would also make sense for why it's not in the beta because they're likely saving these quests for the final release.

                      • There's only one issue with Bungie making the environments more interactive with more lootable/interactive objects or wildlife, and that would be that Bungie is trying very hard to make Destiny play the exact same across all 4 platforms :(. This means that we Next-gen users may not be able to have our upgrades/changes if those changes can't be brought to the Ps3/Xbox360. This isn't to say that it can't be done though, because after seeing how the PS3 version of Destiny looks I'm confident they may be able to squeeze in some extra environmental fun into the last gen console's limited memory. Here is hoping Bungie doesn't forsake us in favor of the older platforms that are in all honesty threatening to hold this birth of a great new franchise, back.

                        • I agree. They could put in some roaming patrols of the Fallen. The area is suppose to be run by the Fallen but yet they are just placed here and there. Why not have them moving from place to place patrolling and protecting what they have taken. They should not be bound to certain areas.

                          • I can definitely understand your concerns regarding this issue. The environment we have been exposed to during this Beta, while beautiful, does seem to be very...scripted and repetitive. It reminds me of very old EQ days where there was a black bear that pathed through an orc camp. Every time the bear got close, the orcs freaked out and attacked the bear. No matter where you were or what you were doing, in game or not, you knew that bear was going to be mobbed by unsuspecting orcs. I am truly hopeful and optimistic that what we have seen as such a static environment is either just for this Beta, or will be addressed by launch. Also, please keep in mind that this is an online game and can evolve quite quickly. Who knows what patches, hot fixes, etc may bring?

The problem with this is that there are so many instances of the same world in Destiny, and that players dont really stay in the same location for extended periods of time in order to witness the Fallen setting up a base. A players first instinct in an FPS is to kill, kill, kill and I dont think we would sit by and watch the fallen set up a base (I personally would) but its hard to have lasting effects on instances of worlds that dont last long enough to be effected.

Then have the wildlife to where you can hunt them to get resources. For example let's say you fight in an area and keep dying and you can't help but desire camo to be less visible to the enemy. However to get the camo you need animal skins or other things. See this would add another dynamic to the game. It would add a reward system easily visible and helpful in the field.
