I have some very preliminary speculation on the glimmer...
Glimmer
noun
1.
a faint or unsteady light; gleam.
2.
a dim perception; inkling.
verb (used without object)
3.
to shine faintly or unsteadily; twinkle, shimmer, or flicker.
4.
to appear faintly or dimly.
Origin:
1300–50; Middle English glimeren to gleam; cognate with German glimmern; compare Old English gleomu splendor
The Glimmer. A rather anticlimactic name, but very mysterious sounding, and it has 7 LETTERS.
The Glimmer are rare/secretive. (judging by the name and definition)
Bungie has described them as “Onyx ships” at GDC, whether the ships are supposed to be hewn from the material is unknown, they probably meant the color onyx.
An interesting thing is that, with some tweaking, you can fit together pyramids to form a rough sphere, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Glimmer ships can form larger constructs.
They seem to be the terror that the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us from.
They probably will be what keeps you playing Destiny for the plot, even though we were familiar with the Covenant by Halo 3 we still had the mystery of the Forerunners to spark our curiosity. I wouldn’t be surprised if they withhold major info/lore until later games.
Thoughts?
(Side note, can anyone think of references to the number 7 here? [already noted the name has 7 letters])

It's just a currency mate
-
Mind control. Like REAPER INDOCTRINATION?! Gimme some of that Sovereign!
-
Glimmer is currency.!
-
I told you guys, that it wasn't gonna be the name of an enemy race and everyone got all butt hurt and defensive. Now look. Look what you have become.
-
Well... this is unfortunate. It turns out 'Glimmer' is some type of currency, used for upgrading weapons, according to the E3 demo.

I think when it said something hit us and tried to stomp us out it was referring to the glimmer maybe this specie is some kind of advanced alien force that is way more evolved than any other enemy

This is my speculation from a previous thread about the Glimmer:
Perhaps the fifth race (the Glimmer) isn't being revealed because they are the most important. I think there are a few possible scenarios. Either: A) the Glimmer brought the other races into the Sol system, whether indirectly or as a part of an allegiance (like the Covenant). B) the Glimmer appear in later into the story, and either serve as a common enemy (like the Lambent, Locust, Human conflict in Gears of War), or force the different aliens to work together, with or without the humans, to fight them. C) the other races are entering the Sol System to get away from the Glimmer (similar to how humanity was pushed into other systems to get away from the Flood) D) the Glimmer were the mysterious cataclysmic event that nearly wiped humanity out. When the traveler sacrificed itself, they were knocked out, but they are starting to return, and are more powerful than all the other alien races. Perhaps the Glimmer are more powerful than the other races because they can disguise themselves, and take the shape of other lifeforms... It would certainly explain this image, and also explain their name. They may be called the Glimmer because that's the only way to tell them apart from those they are copying, their method of disguise isn't perfect, and the impostors will "glimmer" a bit to give themselves away to the wary-eyed. We really won't know for sure what they are or why they haven't been revealed until they are revealed, but those are my best guesses.
Also, what Staten said about a soul being ripped from a body could be the Glimmer, they could take over the body of another alien, which would explain this image as well. The fallen and cabal seem to be leaking out a black smoke and they have a shimmering green color to them. The smoke and color could be indicative that they are currently being controlled by the Glimmer, or are the Glimmer, or something like that.

Just a crazy wild estimate that is probably wrong, but maybe where the Seven Seraphs were organised
-
G (The start of the word "Glimmer") is the 7th letter in the alphabet.

I believe too the reason we have not been shown this enemy yet, is because the enemies in the yellow box are the ones that wiped us out, the one that the white sphere (Traveler) protected us from.

I just came to say that that rhymed and for no other reason
-
The number seven if u go into the religious view of it in the bible it means complete evil or the 7 sins
-
What if Glimmer isn't even the name of the mysterious enemies
-
I know somebody else probably already mentioned it, but my personal bet is that the Glimmer have to do something with this picture. Bungie Loves to hide things in plain sight.
-
i swear if it's a ghost like i've been saying this entire time...
-
This is very interesting. I wonder as we go later to the game how are we going to deal with such powerful ships? I'm thinking you're gonna have to go inside and destroy it from there.
-
The lights on the onyx 3-sided pyramids sort of...glimmer. I personally think that for the most part every alien name we know so far is just a Human created name like how we call the Sangheili "Elites".

Edited by Praedyth: 4/24/2013 9:52:28 PMSo I've been poking around and this image has the main antagonists, along with an unnamed one in yellow, ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/94034802@N02/8679448620/in/photostream/lightbox/ )(Change " at " to "@") I'm a bit new but this seemed worth mentioning.
-
No, we don't even know that, I'm afraid. The only thing you're going off of is that there is an unnamed race, and that they trademarked the name glimmer. that link was never made at GDC or elsewhere. But please, post a quote from an article or timestamp a video and prove me wrong.

fan art for glimmer lol

All right guys we all know Forerunner with magic are Glimmers lol

Thoughts?
you are right on the money by surmising that these flying pyramids of doom will have a mysterious lore that is never exposed in its entirety Bungie never wants to reveal their greatest source of narrative mystery; the question is whether or not the beings that inhabit these pyramids will be seen in the open world of Destiny I would guess that the blueish beams sprouting out of the bottom of the ship are the most pivotal piece of artwork seen in this image; is it sending something, picking something up, constructing something, or are the beams nothing other than the highest form of excrement removal service? who knows? for some reason they remind me of the evil ball of fire that mind controls zorg and the president in the fifth element

Wait what? Where did this word 'glimmer' come from? And am I the only on that thinks it's a terrible name for... well, anything?
