Automatic captioning for deaf players

This is something relatively new, but I've been watching streamers on twitch having auto subtitles options for their streams and thought why not auto subtitling for the in game fireteam chat. I'm a Deaf player on destiny and I can mostly manage a conversation with my clanmates on the headset as well as communication in in game activities. However I still miss aspects of conversations, asking people to repeat stuff and after a long session I'm just wiped from the strain of having to focus on listening. Destiny is a highly social game with a great community but being deaf does put a hamper on that and blocks people from accessing end game content that requires a team. Yes there are deaf teams who have gone through raids and there are kind enough people who will take the time and ensure a deaf teammate can participate but this will help remove some of the basic barriers of communication in-game earlier rather than hop around till they find a suitable group to play with. It'll be groundbreaking should a game like destiny implement it across the board! Consoles ect. Pretty sure PC has Speech to Text programs that can listen to game chat for that. Xbox One has Speech to Text baked in. Settings->Accessibility->Game and Chat Transcription->Speech-to-Text. Not sure if PS has it.

      • My good friend is deaf and we play a lot of D2. I helped him build a PC to bring him over from console since the text chat works so much better with a keyboard. It would be great if the raids provided visual queues for raid mechanics where they give us sound queues so the deaf players had an equivalent. All too often the deaf players miss out on doing raid mechanics due to stuff like this. We also found a discord bot called EarsBot that takes our voice chat and transcribes it to a text chat. This has came in really handy.

        • I think the main issue would still be that most people do not use in game chat. I know PC and Xbox have a feature like this built in. PS and Stadia I'm not too sure.

Captioning game content should be relatively easy (I think the captions already exist and just need to be enabled), but captioning fireteam chatter might be hit and miss, unless team members help by speaking clearly. The type of issue I would worry about would be, for example, someone says "we need more on the left" and it translates as "we need moron the left". Or background noise makes it unintelligible. I see this a lot with other text to speech stuff. Still, I think this would be a great addition if it's feasible. My elderly father went several years functionally deaf before getting hearing aids. He is still hard of hearing, but until he got the hearing aids, he really couldn't hear and understand anything unless you shouted into his ear from inches away, and even that was iffy. So I have spent a lot of time configuring his devices, cable box etc to use closed captioning, and am always frustrated when the feature isn't available.

            • I'm naerly deaf and vog on d2 is a bit more challenging compared to d1's vog. I hope Bungie don't make a new raid where colorblind players have some difficulty with it. And I do appreciate all the captions that are put in the game. It had helped me understand some conversations as well as it also helped me follow the story.

            • Bump when this gains traction it opens up more players for raids and other activities that would need mic’s.

            • 100% agree. I'm not deaf, but this would be a huge help to those who are, and aren't.

            • This would be useful for deaf players, and for foreign players who don't speak/understand english too well. It's a win-win for both groups!
