I can't wait to fight randoms in Court of Oryx

Disclaimer: Court of Oryx looks great and this is really what prison of elders should have been: a patrol area where you can set up encounters instead of a prolonged strike. With that being said this is what I'm afraid will happen: I run solo and meet a fireteam and a couple other randoms in the court. The fireteam, who has a lot of runes, has a member put the first rune in so he can get the best rewards. Close to the end of the encounter the other two position themselves close to the door so they can bum rush the statues so they can get their runes in. Rinse, repeat, the fireteam gets to place infinite runes while the randoms get inferior rewards. If a random does get a rune in in between these rotations the fireteam of dicks will sit down outside the room or quit out, leaving the random to try and do this tier 2 boss by themselves. Even worse if the tier 3 bosses require more than three people to complete in a reasonable amount of time then dick fireteams quitting out becomes a huge issue. Second problem I see is that you have a group that is ready to do a tier 3 encounter and a random quickly throws in a tier one rune. The fireteam isn't interested in doing this and sits down/quits out because they don't care for the lesser rewards/don't want to waste synths. If you want a social experience to work out, saying that the person who is the first to do X will get the better reward will only turn people into assholes and I'm afraid that these kinds of stories will become commonplace. It's actually kind of hilarious because I would rip on destiny for not really having any kind of mmo elements but random players interfering/griefing you is a staple in the mmo genre, so I take back everything I said. The other main problem I see is that no proximity chat means that randoms can directly screw up any strategy you may have. Trying to kite the Knights? Nope this jackass supers and knocks one away. Need to weaken the wizards? Not if this guy nukes one. And that's just incompetence, imagine when trolls enter the fray. Can someone at bungie please acknowledge that these kinds of antisocial behaviors have been forecasted and that the Court of Oryx has been designed to dissuade this kind of behavior? Because bosses are hard enough, fighting randoms may be too much. Instead of commenting on every instance of this I'll put it in my post body and hope people read it: "Just enter with a full fireteam": you can only have a fireteam of three. The court holds nine. Basic math says that you can have a total of six players that you cannot communicate with and you'll have eight total people rushing to get their rune in. "Just leave the room and come back/orbit out and come back" First orbiting out and coming back will be a pain. If you've seen the stream it's quite the hike to get there. Second this is going to be a systemic problem because of the guaranteed better rewards for the first person to hold square. Third it directly contributes to the problem of quitting out if you don't get your way. As long as people show up that you cannot communicate with you will likely be competing against them, not playing with them.

    • [i]My biggest problem is that I have more than 2 friends. It can hold 9 people yet, you can only bring 2 with you. The court is almost always empty. I have 5 people I play with on a daily basis (that is a slow day) yet crucible can only hold 6 and every other activity exluding the raid can only hold 3.[/i]

      • I always help out whenever I'm around the court of oryx. I even help with the tier 3 and the people there usually help me out as well. I do think the court should've been in the hull breach in the beginning. Maybe more people would do it.

      • Court of oryx is only relevant for the quests you have to complete for it. Other than that the rewards blow, your run can get easily be ruined by randoms or you can't beat it because there is not enough people there...like you said the hike jus to get there is forever long and with my ADD I almost never make it to court of oryx because I see other shiny shit on my way that I start doing instead. other than allof that court is pretty fun if you're jus doing it for fun and only fun. My only complaint about court of oryx is that it is sooooooo small...and yes you can fall off that damn thing. Atleast poe was somewhat large in size and you had room to move around and get some tactical spots if anything charge your health for jus a second. But with 9 people in the court, with about 30 enemies which is a shit ton given that the area is crazy small...it's straight chaos. 9 times out of 10 when it's that much stuff happening you jus see morons in the middle of the court jus swinging madly with their swords hoping they hit shit and they aren't doing damage to anything.

I ran with a fireteam and four randoms last night for nearly two hours, managed to pop a few tier one and tier twos, got to run the sword about four times when someone had a tier three, and while it was fun as all get out, the coolest thing I think anyone got was just a legendary artifact ...

        • I hate that for you but I didn't have this issue last night I ran court about an hour with 7 ran some tier 1 and 2 with no quitters. But I can see the frustration and how what you're saying could be an issue

        • I've run it 11 times. It was me and three randoms. Two of them were in a fireteam. Nobody sat back and waited. We all contributed. We even beat a couple of Tier 2's.

        • Come to my court anytime, I did 30ish courts back to back where I didn't get rewards, but got 7 people this week's Calcified Fragment, and probably had one decent drop? I just sit there and mindlessly kill time, chatting to friends. Pretty much every other random I've played has been great, waved and sent us all thanks when he's done, etc. I'd wager most people are the same.

        • This literally just happened to me. I entered the Hall of Souls and saw 6 people fighting in the court, doing tier 1 or 2. So I ran up to help. They had just finished when I got there. Then one of them summoned a tier 1. It was over in seconds. So when I got back up where the statues are at, I waited, and watched, making sure someone else wasn't trying to use a rune. No one approached any statues. All six of them stood at the entrance and waited. I had an antiquated rune to use, so I put it in. It's the Fanatic of Crota this week for tier 3, but with 7 of us it should have been no problem. So the fight starts, I start killing adds right away, the swordbearer spawns, we kill him quickly, one guy grabs the sword, but when I go to shoot the Fanatic, I notice mine are the only bullets heading his way, and two players are already dead. So me and the guy who grabbed the sword revive them, but by then we were so swarmed with adds that there was no way we were going to down the Fanatic, especially with only me shooting. So the sword disappears, and we try again. Sword bearer spawns, kill him, I grab the sword this time. I help clear adds, but as I look around, I see no one shooting the fanatic. Again, two players already dead. I revive them. Both of them die again less than 3 seconds later. That's when I start to realize no one is helping me. I look back up toward the entrance and see two players sitting down behind the shield wall. So I just stand there and look at them for a while. Neither moves. They are very clearly aware of me though. Not AFK, but actively choosing not to help. And then I realize at least 2 of the others were simply allowing themselves to die. I reported the two that were sitting down, dying in the process, and went to orbit before anyone could revive me. I seriously never thought I would see this kind of behavior from the people who play this game. I'm disgusted.

            I've been afraid of exactly this. Thanks for making a post on it so now I don't have to. You are absolutely right. What happens when the second person puts their rune on and then defeats the enemy? Player 3s turn OH WAIT what the heck player 1 why it was my turn oh sorry player 3 but I figured I might as well cuz my buffer is gone so I'm allowed to put one on again

            • Many fair points. One nice feature of the runes (which I've had to do twice) is cancellation. The randies sit down? Cool, die, respawn and don't go back in... event cancelled and rune returned to inventory. Randies messing the strategy? Wipe and cancel :) you do still get summoner's exhaustion though.

              • All they needed was a barrier that stops entry once the event starts.That way only those in the court for each event play. Or a system like mmo dungeons have where you need to join the fire team to enter so you all know what your doing. If you havnt come across the court before and stumble across it whilst exploring you will not know that you may be crashing someone's event

              • This sounds like a wretchedly bad mechanic. And I can screw up someone's strategy by killing a bad guy?! Way to make me want to avoid the whole thing. This sounds even worse than Ether Keys on a timer for randomly spawning Ether Chests and that was enough to make me quit playing House of Wolves after just one story mission for one character. Does anyone at Bungle have a functioning brain cell? Why does so much of this supposedly cooperative multi-player encourage and reward selfish, competitive play? And I am NOT talking PvP competitiveness!

                • I wish I didn't see your point and somewhat agree with you. But I do. I wish I could say that you are a tinfoil hat wearing pessimist. But I cant. I wish I could be confident that Bungie already foresaw these issues and engineered them out of the game. But I cant. Destiny, I wish I could quit you. But I wont.
