Thought I should give a gun control poll that has more than two options, because politics isn't black and white.
EDIT: after a good number of responses, it's good to see that most people are middle-ground on this issue.

Being an Australian, I'd appreciate if someone could explain the situation concerning guns in the US. The way I see it, guns should be give only to those who need them, i.e. cops and farmers, etc. That's what happens here in Aus, and it seems to work fairly well. I rarely hear of shootings on the news. Maybe things are different over there, but I think it's just common sense. If you don't give a man a gun, he's less likely to kill a man. Though, as I said, I'm a dumb Aussie. Could someone please educate me on BOTH the pros and cons? Thanks.

Edited by newbeski: 4/16/2015 5:27:15 PMWhy would a "sane law abiding person" want a gun? What possible legitimate use would you have for it? Guns should be reserved for those that need them for their jobs (farmers etc) and should be strictly controlled.

It lives!

"When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns"
-
I think to have a gun you should have to pass a background check and a gun safety course
-
Anarchy!!!

Edited by dendrox: 4/20/2015 4:14:38 PMEven if a sane person has a gun, there have been far too many accidents recorded.
-
I understand people using them for hunting or target shooting, but why do people feel the need to "protect themselves?" You don't need to carry a gun in the street, or have an entire military weapons cache in your house "just in case."

ITT: teenagers who have never fired an actual gun making jokes about mass murder. Morons, get a clue and learn gun safety. Anyway I'm with OP for the most part. I support the second amendment of the constitution of the United States of America which guarantees the right to own firearms but I do understand the necessity to put restrictions in place. Like many others have stated, criminals will certainly still illegally obtain guns unfortunately. If someone wants to go on a rampage THAT BADLY then they will. But if several sensible, trained citizens are also armed, the maniac will be dealt with accordingly. Godddamn this is a tricky issue.

I would like to include that I don't think fully automatic guns are needed. We can do just fine with shot guns and pistols

Edited by SMD43614: 4/18/2015 5:10:23 AMhttp://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/01/pro-gun-myths-fact-check All the gun owners who are living by a constitution put into place almost 230 years ago will just dismiss this. Hopefully some people can understand. Stop living in the past, you don't need a gun and by owning a gun you're making yourself and everyone around you unsafe. I'm just leaving this here, don't bother trying to start some bullshit argument about how it's your God given right as an American, I don't care what you think. Good day :)
Oh and these statistics are for people that legally own guns. Don't want to here about some bullshit that only criminals with illegal guns kill people. Thanks~
Guns for those who need them anyone who's daily life does not require a gun does not get one
-
well guns are illegal in the uk and everything is pretty chill here
-
Edited by tjustie: 4/16/2015 9:46:30 PMThere should be strict background checks and you should be required to pass a safety class. Then you should be allowed to buy guns.
-
We need to make killing people illegal
-
lets just ban guns, all of them
-
I am very pleased with this poll result so far. I am pro right to own/open-carry/use-in-self-defense a firearm (if you are law abiding and sane), but most of the time when the topic comes up, I am the only one with this opinion.

Define the word "sane"
-
Guns for everyone? But what about bullets ?
-
Sane, law abiding/anarchy. I carry concealed. A big old, full size kimber 1911. No one has said anything about it to me. Never had to use it, but it's there. In my house, I have a much deadlier arsenal. Plus my dog will murder you.......with kisses and love. #Nevermindthedog, bewareofowner

Why is it so hard for people to understand that if every person had a gun, the world would be safer. If 1 insane person pulled out a gun in a public place, 10 others would immediately burn him down if they were carrying. Why do you think people shoot up schools? Because it has a sign on it saying gun free Zone. Do you think that is going to stop someone who is already planning on committing crime? A little sticker is going to make him stop and think? No. Will it stop the law abiding citizen who just wants to protect himself though? Yes. So when that gunman shows up and starts shooting down everyone, there is no good citizen to stop him because the good citizen was too busy following a stupid rule.

In Texas, open carry is currently being voted on. I would do it, as I'm usually carrying large amounts of cash.
-
I like being able to own firearms :/ Crucify me
-
"Let's pass more gun laws because criminals follow laws" -Our congress' logic ladies and gentlemen
-
Right becuase the illegal weapons market where most criminals would get said firearms will definitely follow these regulations!
-
Guns for all blood in the streets!!!!
