So, I think we are the bad guys.

From looking at the descriptions of items and a lot of the things in the grimoir, it seems like we as Guardians have been revived from death and enlisted as blind soldiers fighting enemies we do not understand. Why are the Vex the bad guys? If they were around for so long, what prompted them to attack? Why are the Fallen angry at us if they are simply houses of a certain race, doesn't make sense for them to all hate us, unless we initiated aggression's... Also, what is the Darkness? Nobody knows. It's a name placed on anything the Speaker and our Ghosts, the agents of the Traveler, don't like. Why did the Traveler come to us and give us gifts knowing the darkness would follow and attack us? Probably because he wanted to butter up humanity to use it as an army against the darkness chasing it. But, why would anything try and kill the Traveler? It probably did something bad to someone. I'm just saying, when nobody in your cause knows what you are fighting for, it probably means you are being manipulated by something doing something less than savory, otherwise I figure we'd have an idea as to why we are doing what we are doing. Hell, the Speaker is incredibly vague on purpose. Why? What does he need to retain information for? If you look at item descriptions and Grimoir logs there is just tons of stuff that doesn't settle right. A lot of menacing descriptions of the light in some of those exotics, and take the raid boots for Warlocks for example, the Treads of the Hezen Lords. It mentions the exile Osiris got too close to understanding the Vex. Why was the one dude who almost figured out why the Vex were doing what they were doing an exile? Probably because the intentions of the Vex wouldn't look nice against the intentions of the Traveler/Speaker, and so he was exiled by said Speaker. Just sayin man, I'm pretty sure we are working for the bad guys.

  • Really wish they would have added an alignment option in which you could be various degrees of evil/good. Lawful, chaotic, neutral... all those types of alignments would really add that extra layer of depth this game could use.

  • From what I understand in the original story before Activision -blam!- this game the speaker and traveler were supposed to be bad guys. The black garden was supposed to be inside the traveler.

  • Have you seen any of the enemies fashion armor out of people? We collect thier bone marrow and various other organs (bring me the eyes). Every patrol is either assassination, indiscriminate killing or harvesting the inards. And we do it for bounties which makes us mercs. Akron Priest is an example, we track down those that broke him out and after we slaughter them do we return the Priest to prison? Nope we let him out and act like he was making a run for it.

  • The fallen are just pirates. Captains will kill subordinates for taking a break when they're not supposed to on a regular day. They only maim them on a good day. The whole dreg grimoire card about why the fallen worship the darkness. They follow it because it's they only thing they can't steal from. "You can only claim pain fro the darkness". Also, we do understand the vex. They wish to rewrite the universe, and insert themselves. The question is why? Perhaps to rid it of the traveler? But again, because they're bad and we're good, or the other way around? But this is war. No blacks and whites, just grays. The Vex do what they do for their benefit, and we do what we do for our benefit. When our interests collide, and neither can progress without the other moving out of the way (which is stupid, just reevaluate and go around), that's how a war starts. As for the Hive and the Cabal. Let's face it. The Hive have chains and hooks hanging from their church/temple ceilings. They burrow into planets, and kill them from the inside out like parasites. They chew on bones, and torture each other and other species for fun and experimentation. War or not, that's frickin evil, and we all know it. The Cabal if I'm not mistaken are actually running from the darkness. Which is the whole irony of their story. The most powerful military force we've ever encountered is running in fear. The species thy would rather blow up a planet for getting in their way, instead of just going around, is retreating. They came to our solar system in the hopes they could find something to save themselves from our golden age. Hence why they've made an exclusion zone around Clovis Bray, and anything vex related.

  • See, they absolutely screwed themselves by throwing time-travel in there. The vex can travel through time and we cannot. If our enemies have time-traveling abilities it would make sense that we would never have existed. The vex exist, have existed, will exist, forever and ever, the end. That's quite the knot to untie.

      • After learning more about the Fallen, I realized they were a broken civilization now wandering our worlds in search of scraps so that they can survive. They shoot us because they think we are the Darkness that destroyed their lives, and we shoot back. They are just scavengers looking for things to survive.

        • Possible. But every group fights each other too. So it's too hard to say who the good guys are. Would be great end game before 2.0 comes out to have us take down the speaker and traveller

        • I guess Bungie couldn't finish the game completely because of activision, pushing to release on time. If we have to blame someone then blame activision. The trailer looks amazing. Wish they make a animation movie with a good story like final fantasy Advent children.

They're the rebellion group against the traveler?

            • Fighting for the survival of the last few humans left in the last city on Earth isn't exactly "not knowing what you're fighting for." If we were the bad guys, the Vex, Cabal, Hive and Fallen would not be fighting each other.

            • One cannot define "good" or "evil"... There for I think the traveller is a lost being trying to escape something far worse than the darkness, something that would make a even the "King of all Kings" desprate, so desprate that it would call upon an army of Guardians to fight something that cannot be defeated alone... Something that the Speaker knows is coming but, but is not yet ready to tell... or is it us the fearsome, almighty Guardians who are not yet ready to hear of the inevitable threat. Something all races know as a.....God

            • You just figured out the point of the original story! Before we got the pos we have now it was intended for the traveler and the speaker to be evil. The easiest way to see this is with the stranger. "An evil so evil it fights other evil" and "a side must always be taken, even if it's the wrong one" are both references to us.

            • I don't think the Traveler is evil, per say, but I think out status is supposed to be tragic and dark. There's a Grimoire card that talks about how we're dead things, so even if we win, we're still antithetical to a "pure" version of the Garden.

            • The only fault I find with your reasoning is regarding the traveler knowing the darkness followed. There is no indication that the traveler knew the darkness would come. Maybe the traveler thought it had escaped the darkness and wouldn't be followed? Maybe the traveler had no knowledge of the darkness at all? And anything that messes with time and existence as the vex do can't be "good" can they? They are trying to alter the fundamentals of universal constants so they cannot cease to exist. That screams less than good to me. Benevolence generally doesn't have such a fear of it's end. Though that thought process leads one to ask why the traveler would seem to fear it's demise as well. It seems to fear it's demise because it would no longer be able to protect humanity. A noble goal. What might the vex be trying to protect if they aren't "evil"? They seem to only care to protect themselves. That self serving mindset doesn't really lend itself to an idea of them being anything less than "evil". The fallen I do have a bit more sympathy for. They seem to just be another down and out race as our own who has decided to fight over resources with us, the vex, the hive... Anyone really. I wonder if the few we've seen serving the queen of the reef are under her thumb due to mind control or actual loyalty? If they could be reasoned with they might make excellent allies against the hive on the earth and the moon. Two places with enough resources to support our floundering race and theirs, presumably. The hive are hyper fanatical monsters that seem to have no capabilities for reason on an individual level. The suicidal thralls indicate this. I personally have no interest in any dealings with them that doesn't include gunfire. And the cabal seem to be little more than intergalactic bullies. I wish we could have parlayed with them. Just to avoid the struggle of dealing with them. But so be it. I can take pleasure in finding them in my crosshairs. Overall "good" and "evil" are terms that are harder and harder to apply when such a multitude of sides are found in a conflict. All I know is none of these species have offered me mercy personally. So I offer none in return.

              • I'll tell you how I know I'm not the bad guy: I never shot first at anything in the whole campaign. When a thrall sparks up peace talks, I'll be the first to sit at table. It is my opinion that the Vex were created by the Traveler as its terraforming agents. The Traveler was ultimately infected by a fragment of the Darkness which then gained the Darkness control of the Vex. The Fallen are scavengers and thieves desiring to pick the remains of earth clean. The Cabal seek control of the Traveler by means of the Black Garden; thus they battle the Vex who are defending the Black Garden. The Hive seek to devour the Traveler and its light. The mistake (or what I'd call a mistake) of many theorists is that they bundle all of the enemies into one grouping and equate "us vs. them" with "good vs evil". The Traveler has power (light) that is desired by each race and will be either granted by the Traveler or taken by force; every enemy faction exists independently with independent motivations for involvement in the happenings of Destiny. These are my opinions, but the fact remains that I never shot first.

                • I am the bad guy, I'm evil, I'm considered a demon to some. All because I live for myself. Being good, is just a mask you put on so others like or think of you better. And I'm only working for who gives me the most cash.

                • Right now we are just trying to survive and losing. Fighting for the traveller probably is a bad idea in the long run, but we currently have no other choice. I predict that in the future games of destiny 2 or destiny 3 we will eventually split off from the traveller and join with the queen. The queen seems to be the only one that is seeking for true independence from both the traveller and the darkness.

                  • Wasn't there some concept art from Bungie a while ago showing the inside of the Traveler was the Black Garden? And it ran as part of an idea that the heart of the darkness was inside the Traveler, with the teleporter from Mars taking us inside the traveler?
