PLEASE READ If you (don't) want the beta to transfer

After reading so many threads and comments about the beta transfer controversy I have decided to provide my own two cents on the subject. First and foremost you should NOT expect to have the beta transfer to the full game. If it does then I'll be surprised. So why shouldn't you expect it to? The analogy I like to use is this one: you shouldn't expect a pizza to come out of the ice cream machine. Why? Cause it's an ice cream machine. An ice cream machine dispenses ice cream, not pizzas. In the same way, a beta is used to test certain things to make the game perfect. They use it to see how players play, what they'll do, and how they'll react to certain things. It isn't supposed to be like the final game. This is a good thing because in the end it makes the game better and keeps it from having as many issues as other games in its genre. Just like its a good thing that the pizzas don't come out the ice cream machine, because the ice cream would taste funny. It isn't a headstart either in the sense of getting your character leveled up and prepped for launch day. Think from a developers standpoint. I beat this drum all the time. Do not just see it as an easy thing to do because it looks easy from a gamers view. "This looks very similar to the final game anyway, so the transfer of progress shouldn't be hard at all." It rarely ever works that way. One of the things that have let me mature as a gamer and appreciate video games a lot is the fact that they're very incredibly hard to make. Especially a good one. Top developers in the industry have described it as "making a movie times a million." So with this developers point of view in mind you ask yourself, why would a beta transfer seem unlikely? Well maybe there were certain parameters that were changed before or during the beta. For example: rate of level progression, rate of loot drop, the quality of loot to drop, rates of grenade recharge, the amount of health on certain boss; the list just goes on and on. Also we have to keep in mind the glitches and exploits and bugs, things that could potentially ruin the game, things devs probably would've never noticed had they not conducted a full scale player test. In a way we are a minesweeper, getting rid of most of the flaws the game could have. In short the beta is a game constantly in flux, all dependent on gamer tendencies and habits. Another thing people seem to ignore is just how uneven progress would be from player to player. For example someone who has unlocked all the abilities they possibly could from the beta, (and still be at level 8) can be compared to someone have a higher level who has had the same amount of abilities unlocked. It renders the level almost meaningless if not confusing. The same can be applied to gear. It'd just seem very uneven for a low level player to have better gear than a higher level player. No matter what you did to get that better gear, you would've have leveled up a few times to look the part and reflect that you have put that time and effort. Here is where someone might say "so just give my character the experience I got at level 8" again, devs standpoint. No way they could've been saving all that info. Another thing to note is the fact that this beta was open, meaning anyone with a compatible console could play the game, regardless if you're getting the game or not. Meaning that if the beta were to transfer they'd have to keep all this information even for players who may not get the game at all. I'd assume that they'd want to focus and prioritize the progress of the people who paid money for their game regardless if they played the beta or not. After all, they do all this for the money as they are a business. "So just make the game detect that you played the beta." It may all seem easy but there is almost always a caveat. So what if the player already deleted the saved data? There was no way they could've known it would become important since we were never informed. What if the game was linked to your account and not your console? Then this may be less of a problem but there is still the possibility of incompatibility from one build to the next. In conclusion, just because it is what everyone desires, does not necessarily mean its a good idea. There are many things at play here that we just don't know of. If the beta doesn't transfer then we as gamers should understand. If it does, then we should be that much more appreciative and surprised because it is never that easy. I am primarily a PS gamer and I learned that Bungie is a very talented studio. Playing this beta literally makes me want to get an Xbox One and get the Halo collection, just to see how far they've come as a studio. Bungie did an extraordinary job with providing us with this amazingly entertaining beta that has completely changed me. Before this beta I never paid attention to the game but now it has become my most anticipated game of the year. I know we are all deeply thankful for their work otherwise the community wouldn't be as boiling as it is now. It shows we care, no matter who you are. TL;DR Don't expect it to happen and don't get your hopes up if it doesn't.

    • Understand all. However beta are not in the same way as betas were years ago. The beta is the final version of the game. This is a marketing demo. As data farm has already told us that the beta had all the other maps in. Only minor change like damage stats will be amended from the beta. If this is what I think there is no problem with keeping your character. I don't mind either way. But people have the notion that is unfair or it's a different game has no case. There is going to be a preorder weapon pack with better weapons. Fairness is not what bungie cares about. Mmo by definition is to be more powerful then another. This is the kick. This is why iron banner exist, to serve the need to kill someone easily, this is also why this game will be additive. It drives you to get more unfair advantages over others.

    • Bungie has stated that the beta is a completely separate entity to the 9/9 release. They had the beta ready 3 months ago and stores working on it which is why it was only 900p on xbone. The official release is 1080p on Xbone which was changed after xbox releases the extra 10% gpu. Bungie were unable to access this extra 10% for the beta as it was ready for launch and good to go months ago. Yes some of is would like to transfer our "hard earned" rewards over to the official release. I use quotations because it was only a very short time we played beta in the scheme of things. Remember, we played this beta for one reason, to help bungie gather data. Not for our own character advancement. The beta was never intended to give us a head start on the game. It was it's own entity to help bungie gather data. Be happy you were a part of it and got to experience early, what is in my opinion going to be the greatest game for the next 10 years. That's what halo was to me and destiny has trumped halo in ways I couldn't imagine possible. Anyways that's just my opinion based on everything I've watched and read from bungie and you tubers like moreconsole and dattodoesdestiny.

    • My one and only reason: betas typically run on old code. The 9/9 game will be the most cutting edge code so the character I built a week+ ago was obsolete when I built him. To bring him up to date sounds like a bad situation in the making, if not for me then someone. Then Bungie has to put out these little fires all over the place because people's beta characters are glitching. This will then steal resources from the live game carrying over something essentially dead; the beta code. In short, the game should be an entire experience, not a chapter started in July to be continued in September. I don't care about the character because I was playing and exploring and having fun, not it.

      • Yeah deff not reading that and even if it does transfer (which it's not) I'll delete my characters and start over anyways. Becuz I'm not about to ruin my favorite game for myself with all the rare shit that I got for nothing super easy in the beta.

        • That's an awful analogy, and I think you like a lot of people on this forum are making the mistake of assuming that beta software is always dramatically different from the final release. They won't be going back and building the game up from scratch this far into development, and since all of the platforms are network connected now (hell the game requires an internet connection), any of these issues could be patched. I don't think it's a big deal either way, since it didn't take me a week to build up to my current level(s), really I just think a lot of people got attached to their guardians.

          • Halo collection is not 100% Bungie. Granted they made more than half the games in that collection excluding Halo 4 when the games were originally individually released. But the Halo Collection is being run by 343 Studios which is just dedicated to reproducing old Halo games to produce money and to create onto the Halo Universe. Bungie's ship has set sail away from the Halo Universe. If anything go and just buy original copies of the Halo games. Play them as they were not with a new paint job. The original graphics are part of the nostalgia as well and is a nice way to see the progress Bungie and video game graphics have made in such a short span. This is just the personal opinion of a man who one would not consider a fanboy of the Halo series but did enjoy them none the less. Now your analogy was just rough. I understood it but it was just a stretch in relation to the main topic at hand. I do see what you were going for however just needs refining. Lastly the topic at hand which is a players progress carrying in the beta carrying over into the final release. I personally would like to see it happen. Not for my characters level or the gear I have in my vault, but for the ranks I built up for Vanguards and Cryotech. Vanguards being the big one since it is such a time consuming process. I do however understand it is a beta and understand that it is very unlikely for our progress to transfer over. Does not mean I cannot be a bit miffed that all we get is an ugly nameplate.

            • The word beta in the dictionary should read: "a pre-version of the game used to prepare the behind the scenes side of the game for launch which in no way will carry over to the actual games launch." Betas never carry over, kids just don't understand

                    • I honestly think you're wrong about some of the "from a developer's standpoint" stuff. In terms of experience, I'm pretty sure it's a straight up numerical value. Transplanting a number from one system to a new system isn't that difficult. In terms of pretty much everything else, at this point, I think they're pretty set in terms of most of the mechanics. There'll be bugfixes, but overhauling the way data is stored in a way that would make data transfer from one system to another difficult would require a -blam!-LOAD of work. Not saying anything will stick around, just saying that your reasons for why it would be difficult for developers to make that transfer don't seem to make sense, at least to me. I have very limited programming experience, and very limited experience with data storage, but the bits I do know make it seem like it would actually be harder to make substantial changes to the fundamental structure of the game than it would be to transfer data from one server to another. Changing the way data is stored would require changes to so many other game mechanics (as well as how you define different elements to gear that's already been designed) that I doubt its feasibility.

I don't agree with what you said (in regards to loot balance, or weird analogies to pizza and ice cream), but I for one aren't expecting or demanding anything to carry over into the full game. If it did, that would be super nice and surprising, but I'm prepping myself for a full wipe.

                            • Fair enough But how about they let us keep our gear (not all of it, just what is equipped to our character) and then they reset our characters to level 1. That way, we have to level up the same as any new player to use our gear, and the new player would most likely get similar gear to ours by the time they reach level 8. The only issue I foresee is if they buff/nerf/remove something. Thoughts?
