Troy Baker on gaming cynics.

At roughly the 25:10 mark of this video:
'It should've been out in October!' And you're like, 'Well, you know, the difference between October and when it came out... you can live life and be okay.' And then it comes out, and people are still gonna eviscerate it, and say 'Well, it didn't live up to expectations!' Shut up! ...It's amazing: any game that comes out is amazing, it is ones and zeroes that are translated into Jesus particles, it's amazing, it's incredible what we're doing. 'The graphics aren't that great!' Shut up!
I think a large number of you lot (not us, don't lump me in with the bitter old hacks) could learn a thing or two from Mr. Joel-Delsin DeWitt.

That is a terrible mindset to have. I love the man's work but we shouldn't just excuse games that are bad/mediocre just because they take a lot of time and effort. Otherwise we'd see stagnation in the industry (more than there already is, at least). Gamers are already very unnecessarily accepting of things. Look at the OG Xbone policies; we stood up and said 'No, we will not accept this.' And the policies changed. People complain about microtransactions/Day 1 DLC, etc., but these wouldn't be issues if we didn't continually accept crap from these devs/publishers.

      •
any game that comes out is amazing, it is ones and zeroes that are translated into Jesus particles, it's amazing
The technology behind the creation of video games is obviously fascinating, but it has nothing to do with criticisms of a game. This guy has no concept of how to handle criticism.

      • If a game is not enjoyable to me, I'm going to say so, I don't give a shit what someone else says.

      • Basically what that's saying however is that we shouldn't have the right to voice that we are not satisfied with a product. We are apparently just supposed to spend our money and be happy with whatever we get, because we got it. I can see that argument working should we have gotten the game for free, but otherwise it just reads as a man who can't take criticism well. I can understand where he's coming from with it, but it just doesn't work.

        • I'm all for criticism and people being picky about the things they spend their money on. That said, a lot of the criticism I've seen from ordinary people online (not journalists or bloggers or commentators, just people in comments sections and online forums) has been leveled at really petty stuff: - Anything running below 60 FPS at 1080p is ugly and unplayable - people continue to whine and moan about the latest Call of Duty selling well - something something EA is the devil something something - something something Wii U is worthless something something - whine and moan when a game uses free-to-play - whine and moan when an MMO uses monthly fees I once listened for close to 40 minutes while one of my squadmates in PlanetSide 2 insisted the entire game was broken because he could move a vehicle over some walls in certain bases. I watched people hype up Titanfall like it was the best thing since sliced bread and then stop caring about it two weeks after launch. And perhaps worst of all, I watched these forums over the release of Halo 3 and Halo: Reach... and what was once a forum of excitement and enthusiasm quickly turned into flame wars over petty things like the mechanics of one particular gun or player ability. I love video games. But way too many gamers are whiny, childish, entitled little brats.

          • I think people need to just be honest. Like I can't even read reviews anymore from places like meta critic because when I read a user review and it is from someone who hasn't even played more then 10 hours of the game I lose trust even more in the gaming community. People are doing it to troll, or they just think they are right from just seeing the trailer or playing a beta. I can't even tell you how many times I've played a beta or the beginning of a game and hated it, but fell in love with it when I stuck with it. Dark souls 1 I didn't like until I finally after a year of not touching it got better and then I fell in love with it and even bought dark souls 2. There need to be critics of games, but unnecessary hate or inexperienced players ruin sites like these when I wanna know about a game.

It's weird to think that we have the capability to manipulate two numbers into elaborate simulations of reality that can evoke chemical reactions in our body and mind.

              • It's true that there's a fine line between criticism and abuse, and any criticism made about a game should have be made with respect for the developers.

I agree with his opinion, however he worded it badly. "Stop having standards! Every game that comes out is amazing and doesn't deserve to be criticized!!" No. I don't agree with that one bit.

                • By his logic, I can't criticize MS Paint for being worse than Photoshop becuase ultimately they're both based on binary code. Troy Baker's a great voice actor but his opinion, or rather the basis for his opinion, is just wrong.

                • I've always hated the nitpicking of excellent games. I signed onto this site to defend Halo 2 against its legion of haters. Bioshock Infinite is not the game I'd most like to make my stand on--both because it seemed to have less trite haters than a lot of other excellent games and because I was somewhat disappointed with the game--but it'll do and thank you for making this topic. What bugs me is when all criticism (much of which is valid) turns into banal Twitter-style hate. There are guys who say "I dumped 200 hours into Skyrim and it sucked." If you dumped 200 hours into it then the game didn't suck, you're trying to express some disapproval with something the game did and you are failing to do so with any accuracy. Games that suck are the ones you drop an hour or two in or have to force yourself to beat. Say a game sucks when it is actually a poorly made game. Say a game didn't live up to expectations when it didn't live up to expectations. Say a game had some big flaws when it had some big flaws. Say a game was tremendous when it was tremendous. But due to the composition of internet gamerdom--cynical nerds--pretty much everything that has a flaw or two gets eviscerated by some howling pack somewhere who despite its high collective mental power manages to be about as verbally/textually adroit as a bunch of riled up grade schoolers.

In other words, keep your expectations low as -blam!-. A game that sucks ass is still good because people worked on it. 10/10 logic here folks.
