I still, four years later, cannot wrap my head around the decision to make story and strikes a 3 player activity. I totally understand it from a teaser trailer point of view: a Warlock, Hunter, and Titan stand on a hill...etc....
But story and strikes (and Patrol, if not allowing for even more) should absolutely allow 4 players. For as long as games have had multiplayer, they've allowed an even number of people to join together and play. Especially given that strikes are 95% of what the PvE community does for casual fun and for grinding.
Here's where I'm at and have been since the day I learned Destiny would have a weird 3 player limit: gamers tend to travel in even packs. We all have a "best gaming friend", and if we invite a third it's likely that he/she has a "best gaming friend", but that person will always be left out. When you get left out, you're more likely to not enjoy the game. Destiny 2 need to be more inclusive and make it easier for friends to have fun together, not separate them and/or alienate people.
Here are some objections I foresee hearing:
1. Bungie is allowed to make their own decisions, games are art and they are allowed to make whatever artistic decisions they want. Totally agree! However, giving people a reason to NOT play should not be an artistic direction game developers take.
2. It's not Halo. Again, I agree and I'm happy it's not Halo. But how can Bungie deny their incredible success with Halo? What made Halo fun was playing PvE and PvP with friends. The more the better! Don't limit our ability to have fun.
3. Strike mechanics are designed for three players, four would be too easy! Scale the number and difficulty of enemies. Done!
TL/DR: strikes and story should be 4 players. 3 players seems like an arbitrary number chosen to alienate someone (someone is always left out of the fun)

Four is just as arbitrary as two or three. I thought they were going to open up patrol for better accessibility for this reason. Haven't seen anything official but hopefully it's like 12+ people.
