Four is just as arbitrary as two or three. I thought they were going to open up patrol for better accessibility for this reason. Haven't seen anything official but hopefully it's like 12+ people.

  • Which is why they are making PvP 4 players for D2, because it makes sense. Just like it makes sense for PvE.

  • Four players is a staple in gaming. Those of us who have been gaming our whole lives have become accustomed to having three friends playing with us. Four isn't arbitrary anymore, it's almost a given.

  • Give me some recent examples. This was true maybe ten years ago but recent games don't offer the same thing. It used to be that FPS's offered this for competitive play but moved more in a direction of fewer players per game in order to increase game sales.

  • For Honor, Borderlands 2, Plants vs Zombies 2, The Division. There are a lot of them. And they're all AAA games, not indies. And look, I'm fine with more than 4, but 3 makes no sense. It only makes sense from a "we designed 3 classes" standpoint.

  • Three makes sense as much as four. The option to have more obviously adds something with some costs but four isn't some special number for social dynamics. The vast majority of games with multiple players only have two players. But it really just depends on what the devs are trying to get out of it and the resources they're willing to spend on options. There are comprises they could make but I'm sure those are things they look at when optimizing the game.
