Deej, Gear Ascension is mandatory

Just watched the little IGN chat video, Deej... How am I supposed to become a legend if I don't have a trademark weapon that becomes legendary with me? "Being married to the same gun for 10 years sounds boring" is YOUR opinion... Some of us like the idea of having a signature weapon, and some of us, myself included, don't like where the art is going on the new weapons and armor or hate enemy-themed gear like The Dark Below kit. If you make the new weapons and armor solid contenders, people will naturally want to acquire them, rather than being forced to by numbers... And denying a play-style because You think it is boring is wrong. The real reason the ascension system is mandatory, however, is because this isn't an MMORPG! In a standard MMO, your combat is derived from your class and augmented by the numbers provided by gear. Sure some swords might swing faster or slower, but autoattack is like 2% of your DPS and combat. This is a shooter with live, twitch firearms... Every single one of which runs a little differently than the next. When a player finds a "favorite" gun, it isn't just his favorite looking weapon, it is his favorite running weapon. I have run a custom tuned 1911 pistol in competition for almost 12 years now... Are there better modded guns out now? Yes Are there a lot of newer guns I have liked and have added to my collections and ran? Yes But the bottom line is I cannot run any gun as fast or as hard as that 1911. It has been tuned to my preferences and trained with until it is an extension of my hands, so that's the gun that I drive in matches that count... Just like Fatebringer drivers in Destiny (Or in my case Timepiece and Grim Citizen) You cant treat Destiny like an MMO because it simply isn't one. I would actually like an answer about plans for long term ascension, because I am done tomorrow if all my work acquiring, leveling and customizing my characters is gonna be moot in 3 months... I was done before until you announced Etheric Light. Edit: Great comments, thank you! We are not alone, and we want an answer, Deej!

  • I'll be totally frank. MMO games are about being smug. Smug because you have stuff that new players wish they had. If every new class of players has access to the best gear, what's the point of being a veteran player? You'd be better off shelving the game for five years and then buying an expansion. I don't want new players saying, "Nice pea-shooter, gramps." I want them saying "Holy shit! Where'd you get THAT gun?!?!?!" So I can say, "It's from before your time, little fella."

      • Expansions are supposed to expand a game not make 3/4 if it obsolete

        • Those of us that bought the DLC are mostly fine with it. It's a mmo mechanic, they adopted it, and it's for the better. Get over it.

        • Agree! We should have the choice how we want to become legend. What maybe boring to others maybe entertaining to others no matter if it's for 10 years.

        • i agree, we worked hard for our weapons, we are legend, we are year 1. why should we conform to year 2 noobtivity? we should have a feature that we can name a single weapon and it gets stronger over time, to prove our seniority. every master has a signature weapon. its passed down through the ages, and with it its masters legend grows.

I completely agree with you! To me it seems that Bungie is trying to push away their veteran players for... new players? I will forever and always have Fatebringer in one hand and a Gjallahorn in another. It took me MONTHS to get Gjallarhorn! But a couple weeks ago Xur was selling them like cotton candy! Bungie.... I love you, but I hate you.

        • Bump Agreed Instead of making the game bigger they literally made 3/4 of content worthless While making only 1/4 viable Not to mention it could've prevented clones now cause everyone will be running around in the same 1/4 of content that mean anything just poor decisions

          • Bump. I wouldn't wanna ascend every weapon I have but one specific weapon per character I would love to ascend like Bad Juju or a weapon that isn't allowed in year 2 like Vex Mythoclast.

          • I say you have a one time ascending shard that levels your year 1 gun to year 2. A ONE TIME.. MEANING FOR ALL CHARACTERS. I can't let go of some weapons strictly off rarity. Some are from the first month of destiny and some are not, but even still a guardian should have the power to do that.

          • This point has changed where I stand on this, because I cast my mind back to my Up For Anything auto rifle and I remember how amazing that gun felt for me, but eventually it became so underpowered I had to leave it behind. Now auto rifles have had a buff it'll be great to use... If it didn't level me down to 200 Light Granted I'm enjoying the new weapons and I'm looking to run a scout rifle set up once I get a decent one, but that's just me. I know there's thousands of players who love their original weapons, even if it is Fatebringer.

            • First expansion we had to regrind/buy/find new gear. Second expansion was a bit more merciful and allowed us to ascend gear. Third expansion we have to start from scratch. All those hours finding and aquiring gear taken away. The worst part I think is that we payed them to screw us over, to erase all of our efforts over the last year. Something else thats puzzling is the rebalancing of the year one weapons. Why would you even bother if your plan was to make them useless.

            • Let me begin by saying that I agree with nearly all of your post. I disagree on whether Destiny is an MMO, but although we could quibble about whether it qualifies as massive (It has a massive player base in total, though a limited number in any location instance.), I'm not sure how being an MMO or not affects whether people should be able to upgrade their Year 1 legendaries/exotics to be viable for new endgame activities. I would like to point out that it isn't just the weapons. I love my Badger, and I haven't had some exotic weapons long and will probably never get most exotic weapons now, but there's also armor I don't want to give up.

Very well said! I concur and second your motion (and stated intention). Let's add too that the M1911 was designed in - 1911. One hundred years later its still a preference of many people and generations of American soldiers who took it into battle despite claims that it was inferior. There's hubris is Deej's remarks. The arrogant belief that Bungie 'can' produce (and declare) superior weapons has been disproven in history repeatedly. With Bungie it's been disproven ad nausia, in just one year. Moreover, there's a matriarcial tone too, in the world's worst Comms Guy (Deej). "Make tough choices", while we radically alter balances of individual weapons and entire classes. "Make tough choices", despite 3 elements we'll (Bungie) favor hysterically. "Make tough choices", despite our Bungie insistence that you join multiple styles and rules of play in PvP, PvE, Coop and neutered play with rewards we'll mislead you on. Bungie is killing a game and an arguably an industry with one fatal but obviously institutional personality flaw: hubris. While I hope they will listen, I pray that their masters are simply browsing these forums and or reading Bungie's tripe.

              • I want to drag my MIDA through the entire thing, wear and tear could be shown as you progress through each game until you're left with a gun that misfires and falls apart. Bungie fail to realise players become attached to a weapon because they feel comfortable using it and know it will not let them down in a fight.

              • Bump! I completely agree I feel like I wasted my time last year! It's okay to bring in new weapons and armor but how can you have a diverse community if everyone looks the same each expasion?? Let us keep the gear we have and your game will be bigger and better than you ever thought plus every person worked hard to build those raids and end game content and now all their hard work of developing the game is gone, never to be seen again?? Where is your pride in the game you've created?

              • like i said before, we deserve our weapons, weve been here to get them, they shouldnt be nurfed just because bungie wants to give us new weapons. ill collect the new weapons, but i want to keep my old weapons as well. i want them to be strong as year 2 and i want them to continue to get stronger the longer we have them. that way when year 10 hits, any noob that joins in on the completed game cant be as powerful as someone whos been with the game for 10 years since the beginning. we need a system in place that strengthens us the longer we play. a time based system so that if you play for 10 years youre a lot more powerful than someone who dropps in on the last year.
