Empirical testing on Attack Rating and damage output

Since people seem to still be gravely misinformed about the subject, I decided to make a video demonstrating the effect of differing Attack Ratings on damage output. Tested using a maxed Word of Crota and a Peccadillo's Grace, the lowest Attack weapon of equal Impact I was able to obtain, against level 1 enemies.

  • I thought everyone understood Attack is basically a cap and the first 2 numbers are basically the highest level enemy they're 100% effective against. I'm pretty sure that info is in the game because I figured it out before I hit 20. Defense makes no sense to me, I'm not even sure it affects gameplay since your level is basically your defense.

You should do at least these tests if you want to get a full picture of how Attack Power works: Group 1 AP 331 and AP 215 weapons; Level ~15 enemies. Group 2 AP 331 and AP 20 weapons; Level 1 enemies. Group 3 AP 331 weapons; Level 32 enemies with and without level 30 damage cap. Group 4 AP 300 and AP 331 weapons; Level 30 enemies without damage cap. Group 5 [optional] AP 20 and AP 215 weapons; Level ~5 enemies.

    • The video clearly demonstrates Attack level caps, but not much else. Here's a post by me on Attack and Damage, read it, if you've got questions I'll likely answer.

    • Through extensive testing it seems that there is in-fact an impact on damage output between varying attack ratings. However this difference only appears when the weapon is within 10 levels of the enemy. Against a level 5 enemy a 150 attack weapon and a 331 attack weapon will do the same damage. However between a 140 attack weapon and a 331 attack weapon against a level 5 enemy, the latter will do more damage.

      • Neat, but like others have said, AP really comes into play at higher levels. I upgraded my fang twice during the last Sepiks nightfall and the damage went up by a lot. Went from almost killing a 30 dreg with 1 body shot to actually doing so.

      • Fire your weapon at level 1,2,3,4,5... So on enemies. After a certain level, your damage caps out. So, a hand cannon will do 500 damage on level 12,13,14...so on enemies. If you divide the attack rating by 15, you will find the cap out level. Try this for yourself. Fire a max weapon at a level 20 enemy (it will do same damage if it was 300 attack) then at a level 22 enemy, then a 32 enemy. The level 22 and 32 enemies will take the same damage

      • Where did you get the grace from? Did you have it vaulted? I'm only asking because I don't seem to be able to buy the vanguard armory stuff anymore, it all disappeared from the inventory a long time ago. Great video btw, nice to know :)

        • Attack high leveled enemies. Impact and level are big factors =). A 331 gun will do more damage against a lvl 33 enemy. The first two numbers will determine the level (331 is 33, 300 is 30) enjoy!

        • It matters on higher level enemies. There is a cap on the amount of damage you will do to an enemy based on its level.

Bad testing environment. Attack only applies to monsters level 20 and higher. Also, a higher attack means more damage against an enemy above level 20. I've leveled 3 Fangs of Ir Yuts: My unleveled Fang did less damage on a level 24 enemy than my 331 attack one. Therefore, when the new attack ratings from HoW come out, we will be able to do even more damage.
