Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin

So im finally taking a break from Destiny as I pretty much have nothing left to do until HoW (like a lot of people at this point). I'm thinking about picking up Dark Souls 2 on April 7th when they remake it for the next gen. I've never played any of the series before but I love fantasy RPGs and also a challenge (which from what ive read this game delivers). What im wondering is will I be missing anything or left behind without playing the first one? I would rather not play catch up on a new game and am hoping I can just jump into the sequel without being lost. Also, in terms of playing with friends and online with other people; is there a pvp or competitive side or is strictly co-op? Another question I have about the game is how much play time should I expect out of the $60? I try and only buy games at their new full price if the replayability is high and I wont get bored after a week or two. Any other tips, comments or reccomendations about the game would be great. I really try and do my research on a game before I buy it.

You won't be left out. The game's lore is set far enough in the future that most of the lore is independent. If needed, you could probably watch 20 minutes worth of lore videos to catch up, if needed. As for replay ability, you can easily get 60 hours on one playthrough. Combine that with PvP, multiple builds, play styles, NG+, and all the DLC content, and it has very high replay value. As for tips... Go into it blind. This will make it the most fun first time, until you get absolutely stuck. In the case that you do get stuck, try to head somewhere else. There are multiple paths to take in the game. Knowing when to block and when to roll is very important, so learn how to do that. Also, learn your weapons. When attacking, you're stuck in the animation, so know when you can strike without being hit yourself. Don't rush through, and take your time with the combat. Rash actions oftentimes lead to death. If you need any more help, there are plenty of Souls fans ready to help out, either with advice or in-game summoning. Good luck, and Praise the Sun!
