So by now I think many have seen the Weekly Update of today, and that there will be matchmaking for Weekly Heroics. I am usually not the one to react strongly to changes, I tend to be pretty laid back. But this I did not like....at all.
Weekly, Nightfall and Raids are my favourite activities in the game and I got a number of friends I play with. However, several of us has day activities (jobs, school, family etc) that on occasion makes us unable to play together sometimes and then it is my own preference to solo Weeklys and Nightfall, mostly cause I like the challenge, in particularily the latter. Forced matchmaking in the former would take that part of fun away from me.
I can perfectly see the standpoint of players wanting this, I was once even one of them. But right now as it is, like I said, soloing the Weekly and Nightfall Strikes are my personal preference if I cannot get friends together and therefore I am personally strongly against forced matchmaking.
Now, I've seen the topic come up quite often about creating matchmaking for the team-events currently lacking and while I think it is a good idea for the casual or inexperienced, it makes life more frustrating for the lone wolves like myself.
That Bungie adresses this with a solution is great, it shows that they still cares for player feedback. Unfortunately, in my mind this is not a good solution. The perfect solution would be to implement matchmaking, but make it optional to use. That way, players who wants it can use it and hopefully make their lives easier while players who for whatever reason wants to go alone will remain able to do that.
My main concern is based on my regular strike experiences where I, more times than I want to admit, end up with players who either just speedruns through the whole thing or plunks their behind down in a corner somewhere and just goes along for the ride without contributing. And I fear this will end up bothering players like myself if we are forced into matchmaking on Weekly Heroics.
While you, Bungie, can't do much to teach players how to behave or adapt, you can still keep that plague from following the lone wolves into the Weekly Strikes where the stakes are higher.
Awesome announcement that matchmaking for Nightfall and Raids will not come with 1.1.1 so we can still do those without a full team, but please Bungie, I implore you on the strongest possible terms to make the matchmaking for Weekly Heroic optional!
EDIT: So happy to see people agreeing with me. Keep the word around and hopefully Bungie will take note. It is great that they listened to the community about matchmaking, but not as great when they missed the host of players wanting the strikes as they were.

My girlfriend and I have done these together as a duo since the beginning. It was kind of a fun thing to do on a Friday night after a long work week for both of us. At first I thought matchmaking might be cool, as I have a character on Xbox One and no friends to play with on that console, and I'm by no means good or patient enough to do most Heroic Strikes alone, but then i remembered past experiences with randoms in normal strkes. At first, she couldn't understand how it could be a bad thing or why I was dreading the strike this week. TThat was until we booted up our games and got halfway through the level 30 version of the strike only to have our random partner abandon us without a word during a firefight. Needless to say we went down and had to start again from the beginning of a hard encounter, this time with no heavy ammo to speak of. tl;dr - Matchmaking isn't a bad thing necessarily but in my experience playing with random people is more often than not - unfortunately - the cause of many headaches, and for something as potentially stressful as a heroic strike it should be optional not mandatory.

Edited by Abyssal Shift: 2/20/2015 7:29:52 PMMy problem is why can't we have the choice. You want to put in matchmaking, fine. For some of them I wouldn't mind some help, but if it is something I can solo on my own I would much rather do that. So make it so we can choose whether we enter matchmaking or not.

You still can solo nightfall just not weekly. Calm down

Speed running for the win.

I was saying this elsewhere, Bungie should include on the screen with the difficulty choices, an option to "Solo this" in fact I suggest that's what they call it. "Solo this!"
-
So you have to cry because 2 other players will take the glory of completing the weekly strike with you? Get over yourself kid.

Edited by Azreal80: 2/20/2015 5:54:00 PMI do like the optional idea. I'm all for options. That said it's does slightly amuse me that in your argument you ask for the ability to lone wolf solo it yet complain about folks AFK ing. I do however understand the frustration in AFK ers. IF they don't change it and Bungie seems to stick to their guns (see random Atheon teleports, all cheese removal, and loot caves) then my only suggestion for you is turn to the forums. Find 2 folks that will team up with you and let you solo it, or actually assist you. I have had mixed results with LFG. But here on these forums it's been better. Good luck, I would hope they give us both options. I'll take two randoms players if my friends are not online so I kinda welcome the addition. Edit: saw a response from you below about AFK and folks getting rewards for no work. I respect that and agree it's not fair. So I support ya. Hope Bungies hears this and at least adds a option to solo it.

providing a solo player option would be like so hard as to be next to impossible, it is hugely unfair of us to ask for options such as a single player button or matchmaker button that would be far too much to expect from a company that trying to focus on writing software.

I saw this as a bit of good news myself. I do agree that they should give us the option to run solo for those that want that though.

I don't think you're forced to do matchmaking with weekly's. Just get a group of 3 and then go to the weekly. I for one am VERY VERY VERY happy they finally have matchmaking for weeklies. It took me soooooo long to get a fireteam together. Really really happy. Bungie, if you're reading this: THANK YOU!!! :-)

I think a lot of the issues could be addressed by adding filters to the matchmaking process... Team Size, Min Level, Mics, etc... You'd only need a few dimensions to select into a compatable group that fits what you're looking for.
