Everyone these days feels like they are so entitled to everything and then some and it's from just a few years of "rewards" IRL for things you never got rewarded for in the past. Gas stations, grocery stores, online shops, Best Buy, video games, fast food - you name it - they're all going offering you "rewards" for doing this and that. Buy a burger, get a reward. Pick up milk on the way home - get fuel points. Sign up for an email list - get a discount.
It all sounds pretty good - until you realize that now everyone thinks they deserve a reward for everything.
I downloaded Destiny and turned it on and killed a devil walker all by myself. WHERE'S MY REWARD?
A: Your reward is the satisfaction of killing a devil walker.
A: Your reward is the fun of playing a game.
A: Your reward is being allowed a sneak peek look at Destiny.
A: Your reward is a feeling of accomplishment.
I fear that one day soon, kids will want some kind of reward for getting out of bed in the morning and going to school, too stupid to realize that the "reward" for going to school is not being a dumbass your whole life.

You also get 200 xp points.

That's how I feel about iron banner rewards. Why should the guy who comes in last have as much a chance of getting loot than a guy who comes in first and dominates. Its the whole everyone gets a trophy for trying bull. You should be rewarded for being good at something. Not for just participating.

Edited by U4442043: 7/23/2014 4:17:09 PMI am 20 years old and sadly I see this a lot in my generation. Especially at work. All the guys my age always complain about the boss telling them to do things and I'm left there thinking to myself ".....but that's your boss?". This sense of entitlement is horrifying and id like to personally apologize for my generation.
-
I've got the Borderlands vibe here and still don't mind boss' not dropping rewards. I played way too much Borderlands, and I can feel this game will be the opposite when it comes to loot. Good loot is found from crates in this game and not boss'. It's more about story in Destiny than farming loot. That's why the bosses are not dropping much. I do want more loot crates though. NOT ENOUGH LOOOOT!

I agree with everything u said u till u mentioned schools. The entire school system is flawed and broken. Schools themselves were created to support the growing industrial age post steam engines. Before that there were mostly artisans and apprentices. In the current age where information is free, schools are redundant. Couple that fact with how kids these days are only learning what's on the next test....they are not learning anything other than "the test". Where does this education leave most young adults? Jobless and 30+ grand in debt for "higher education", it's all a big lie. F schools, go freelance, drop out and start a small business. The only time you are near guaranteed a job is when your debt is over 100k ie. Doctors n such.

It's not so much the game... But how the individual perceives achievement.

Edited by Hobby8: 7/24/2014 4:52:16 PMPretty sure that 1 video game and the internet isn't going to destroy society. Also, keep in mind that what you're seeing is 1st world problems. Every other society in the world is busy worrying about surviving...like in real life.
-
Just because the examples you use have the word "rewards" in them, doesn't mean it's an entitlement thing. Those are marketing schemes, whether for customer retention or information gathering. You really got your wires crossed on that one.
-
You do realize those "rewards" are marketing ploys to drive profits and create additional streams of revenue, right? Seriously, don't do the "in my day" routine in a video game, it's just ridiculous...no wait, it's worse, it's redunculous. Humans function on a reward system, just some have a different metric than others. Yours isn't superior, just yours.

What's really disgusting to me is the numerous threads popping up about "being able to keep their gear", etc. Like the OP said, your reward is the satisfaction of testing the Beta and having a good time.
-
Welcome to hunality since time began? Who the hell didn't do anything to survive I think 'living another day was a damn good reward back then too' geez get a clue.
-
yet it is very clear that even with a full education people will still believe, do and say dumbass things. Especially on the internet. This thread is the reward for just opening it.
-
Lol this man can't be serious
-
It is a simple answer because society is at the point they need the pat on the back to go forward and nothing is gonna change that, Because someone will always pat them on the back.
-
Undeserved entitlement has been eroding the foundation of America for generations. Has been since the WWII vets came home and started families.
-
.....pretty sure I just got a reward for reading your entire post. But seriously,.. I smell what your cook'n. I'm picking up what your laying down. I too wonder about the future these kids will bring.. But then I remember what some old timers thought of me when I was just a grom. I turned out kinda oK... You know, contributing to society, paying my bills, squashing the Fallen like the bug bastards they are,.. Etc. O.o,y,,

Ranting about other people rant's just clogs these forums. There is nothing to see here, move along.

Why can't i like this post more than once
-
LOL!!!!!

Wait, let me make sure I understand. You confuse businesses' incentivizing a growing customer base with consumer entitlement, apply that confusion to an imagined player in a loot-driven video game, and conclude that society will cannibalize itself in some reward/expectations feedback loop. So, Rewards Card + Bungie = Apocalypse? Are we being trolled?
-
Edited by Krude Methodz: 7/23/2014 8:36:40 PMStop ranting at nothing and fearing nothing... Enjoy the awesome game dude!!!
-
I beat a devil walker all on my own and knowing that I had did that was a great reward for me :)
-
My advise to Bungie " Do not pampers your player too much..."
-
Haha, I love the last part :)

I love the beta to beceause of the satisfaction of reaching bv lvl8 or getting a realy nice weapon of a random drop where you kill'd hunderds of fallen for and stil had fun even if you can't use that weapon
