I want to get into the Halo series

Hi everybody, I'm new to online forums. I decided to join this website because I'm really interesting in Destiny, it just sounds really awesome and something that my friends and I would have a blast playing. I love Sci-Fi, and exploration and adventure so this game just seems perfect for me. After looking into it a bit, I found out that Bungie also made Halo, a series that I've heard much praise about. I couldn't get into it because I've had a PS3. However, as I'm likely to get an Xbox 360 soon from my friend, I'm gonna get a Halo game as well, to see how good it is and what to expect from Destiny. So, which game in your opinion is the best? Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo Reach, or Halo 4? Also, what do you guys like about Halo the most? What got you into it? And feel free to discuss all things Halo here, so I can see which one to buy. They all seem to have gotten great reviews, so I don't really mind which one I get. Preferably though, I'd like to be able to do a ton of things with my friends on it, as I prefer online to Campaign usually. Thanks :)

  • Greetings! Few things to start off with :) 1.) Yes, I'm commenting in this thread because you're a girl. 'Tis a fantastic thing to see! 2.) Feel free to hit me up in the PM section. We can discuss things on there! 3.) Don't be intimidated. I'm not the stereotypical guy. If anything, I'll be the one in the kitchen :D

    • Welcome to the site! Concerning multiplayer, Halo 3 was my favorite, but there are very few people playing it now, and you could really only play with friends. I know you said you'd like to play mainly with friends, but the halo campaign is definitely something you dont want to miss. The characters, scriptwriting, environments, everything is great. I'd recommend the first Halo. You'll want to play it first so you understand the story, then move on to Halo 2, 3 and then ODST, if your thinking you want to stick with it. Halo Anniversary was released on the 360 as a remake of the Halo 1 campaign. You can play co-op with your friends in this ones campaign if your leaning towards playing with friends. Anyway, I hope my suggestions helped. Have fun!

    • I would start with CE, and move up to Halo 2 and 3 and so on. Halo 3 has the best multiplayer, but it's old now and the population is dwindling. Dont buy Halo 4, not worth the money.

    • I have no idea what's going on in this thread... Reach is a horrible Halo game and Halo 4 is garbage because the dumbasses at 343 Industries ruined Halo. Start with real Halo games. Halo CE from 2001, Halo 2, and Halo 3.

    • Play it in chronological order it would be awesome. Halo Wars>Halo: Reach>Halo CE>Halo 2 (up to the end of Metropolis (3rd level))>Halo 3 ODST>The rest of Halo 2>Halo 3>Halo 4

      • Reach is by far the best Halo game. It's also the first game story-wise, so you should start there.

        • Get all of them to be honest. Start with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, then Halo 2, then Halo 3, Then Halo 3: ODST, then Halo Reach, then Halo 4. Please don't prejudge Halo 4. Everyone on these forums seems to have a stick up their bums whenever it's mentioned because 343i didn't make it the way they wanted it. If you have any questions in regards to the lore, please ask me anything. I've got the entire lore memorized.

          • Everyone's got their own choice, but i'm in a bit of a similar situation to you(op)... I'm migrating form the 360 and getting a friend's old PS3 when the next-gen hits. Are there any Must-haves for the system? I was a big fan of the original Killzone on the ps2, but i'm not too sure what else the ps3 has to offer. Oh, and as far as the halo series goes, If MM is more your thing, Reach still has a pretty active population, often times peaking higher than Halo 4. Halo 3 is still good as well, but it can take a few tries to get a match though games are extremely satisfying. Halo Wars is kind of a stand-alone thing, but it's got a very active population and takes considerable skill. the 1v1s are viciously short! Just a heads up, the hardest game to obtain would be Halo 2 online stores are your best friends here. I'd personally suggest getting Halo 4 only after you finish up with halo 3. It's pretty disorienting even for veteran players.

          • Start with Halo: Combat Evolved and then go from there. Try and snag a copy of Halo 2 from the Bungie store or maybe ebay. Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 4 (made by 343i not Bungie) are all easily found at gamestop. Give them a go and enjoy.

            • You could start in chronological order, (Reach-Halo:CE-2-ODST-3) don't bother with 4, it sucks cause it sucks on its own, not because it wasn't made by Bungie. Also stay away from Halo anniversary, get Halo:CE of the Xbox marketplace. And welcome to the community!

            • Wow I got a lot of replies! Thanks for all your help guys! I decided the first game I'm going to get is Reach. It appears that the general consensus is that it has the best and most active Multiplayer, good single player campaign, and there's a lot of customization I can do on it. Again, thanks for all your help everybody! I look forward to playing Destiny along with you all later :)

              • Get the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Starting anywhere else would make no sense. I honestly would recommend all of them though. Used copies of each shouldnt cost too much.

                • Just some advice, but if you want to know about Halo then I'd go to 343i's site. People around hear aren't too fond of Halo.

                  • Get all of them. I like it because it's not like every other shooter out there. It has a great combat system with an actual story. The lore behind Halo is immense and yet easy to understand. Play the games and read the books.

                  • Get every Halo game up to reach. Instead of Halo 1 get combat evolved anniversary (Halo 1 with updated graphics). Halo 4 sucks. It isn't like Bungie Halo games but hey if you like COD you can try it... *Gets ready to be flamed*

                  • Welcome to Bungie.net! I'd suggest playing through the original trilogy in order: Halo CE (I'd suggest the Anniversary edition since you'll be playing on a 360) Halo 2 Halo 3 I'd recommend Halo 3: ODST too. Some like it and some don't. It's different but I like it. Then there's Halo Reach and Halo 4. Halo 4 isn't made by Bungie but Reach is. The gameplay in Reach is different and the story is IMO not as good. Halo 4's story is good though. Although gameplay wise Halo 3 is better.

                  • Id suggest playing them in order mainly CE, Halo 2 and then 3 although sadly you've missed the golden years of Halo multiplayer but the campaign's are more than enough reason to buy them.

Welcome to Bungie.net! I hope you enjoy your time here. Of all the Halo games, Halo 3 had what was probably my favorite multiplayer experience and Halo 3: ODST had my favorite campaign experience; however, I would definitely suggest playing them in order. They should all be pretty cheap now, so you shouldn't have to break the bank to get the entire series. As Butane already said in this thread, Halo 4 or Halo: Reach are your best bets for finding people to play multiplayer with. Halo 4 just recently got a title update so it wouldn't be a bad idea to play that now (but I still really recommend getting all of them and playing campaign in order). Halo: Reach and Halo 4 don't get much favor around here but at this point, I think it's the internet riling itself up because there's no shortage of rage online. They're both fun games in their own right and I think that if you want to really experience the Halo series, they all warrant some play time.

                    • You can either play is chronologically or in the release order. Chronologically: Halo Wars (Not necessary to play though, it is very different and doesn't impact the story) Halo: Reach Halo CE (Anniversary) Halo 2 Halo 3: ODST (starts part way through Halo 2) Halo 3 Halo 4 Or in release order Halo CE (Anniversary works too) Halo 2 Halo 3 Halo 3: ODST Halo: Reach Halo 4 (I didn't include Wars this time)

My personal favorite multiplayer is Halo 3, so I recommend starting with either that or one of the other original 3 games. My least favorite is hands down Halo 4. All the campaigns are pretty good (except Reach-it was lackluster), but I would start the story from the beginning and go right through it: Halo Wars Reach Halo: CE Halo 2 -ODST (takes place right after the Metropolis mission, is also my favorite campaign) Halo 3 Halo 4 However, the order of release was CE, 2, 3, Wars, ODST, Reach, then 4. That's another viable option.
