Inside the US, we don't refer to ourselves as "American", we seem to go by whatever the hell our descent was, but outside of the US we refer to ourselves as "American".
Is America the only country that does this?
Also, on another note: To all you who are not native English speakers: When you buy a videogame, do you play it in English or your native language?

I do it because I like it, but to other people outside of Canada I say I'm canadian. Sometimes I say I'm german but that's because they ask more or I feel like going more into detail. On the other hand, Americans refer to themselves like that because their name makes it so they have to. "The United States of America" really leaves no alternative.
