It seems like they took Sega's money and used it on other projects while outsourcing "b-teams" to work in Aliens. Either that or Borderlands was a complete fluke.

I think they knew from the beginning that Colonial Marines was going to fail. Therefore, they focused their attention on other projects, e.g. Borderlands. Borderlands wasn't a fluke, Gearbox is a good developer, Borderlands is a good game. Colonial Marines was, as I believe, an inherently bad game, as most movie tie-ins are (even though it was released about 20 years after Aliens).

If they knew it was going to fail why did they sign the contract to make the game? SEGA gave them 6 years to make this game and they didn't deliver. And no way are Gearbox a good developer. Borderlands 1 is mediocre and Borderlands 2 is indeed a great game. Duke Nukem Forever sucked ass. And the Half Life expansions they made were terrible. Gearbox are not a good developer at all. They have only made one good game.

Because they'd get paid. I agree, Borderlands is mediocre while Borderlands 2 is great.

No I think they took it with the best intentions and then decided to concentrate on their own game whilst out sourcing it to sub par developers with limited resources available because they used most of the budget given to the by Sega to help develop Borderlands.
