I thoroughly enjoyed the series and decided to listen to the source material audiobooks. I cannot answer your question, though, since I'm only about halfway through the first book. That being said, it seems to me that I will finish the book prior to where the first season of the show ended. Also to note: So far, I don't believe the series has changed the overall story from the book, but how it is told is quite different. Maybe that'll change, but they'd have to introduce a few more characters before it resembles the cast of the Oxford 5 (it's only about 1 guy right now).
